Re: Which products to use for detailing

Thanks so far on products. Iwas thinking getting the Porter cable 7424xp orbital buffer but what pads and such should I use for applying and taking off the different products. Also where is a good place to order from?

Re: Which products to use for detailing

I said the 105/205 combo based on his description of a 98' model Jeep and his statement about swirls etc. That was the only reason. But with my experience with the 105 was it doesnt cut so severly like some products my father used when I helped in his detail shop that you had to gradually worked up and back to a super glossy finish. It was like 6-8 steps depending on the extreme cut you started with. Really...with the 105....I didnt use an extreme wool pad or anything. I would think it would have a lot to do with the pad you use.

Re: Which products to use for detailing

I have a question. (Pics below) Is this discoloration on my tailgate due to a clearcoat issue that could be buffed out with a PC, or is it somehow a bleaching effect of the sun on the PX8 itself? In essence, can the fading be polished out, or do I need to get the tailgate repainted?

Re: Which products to use for detailing

whats the surface feel like? Is it rough and not smooth like the rest fo the paint. It sorta looks like cars of old before clearcoat......they had no clear protectiona nd the sun would fade the paint. Its really hard for me to say without being there to get the feel for it. Buit it looks lke there NO clear there and the basecoat is fading.

Re: Which products to use for detailing

The surface is smooth (relatively speaking) and there is definitely still clearcoat there. Up close, you can obviously see the scratches and swirls in the clear, but to the naked eye, it looks like the paint underneath has been faded by the sun. Considering that this Jeep has spent 10 years in the north, if it had been parked facing north for the majority of its life, then the sun would have been beating down on the tailgate the whole time. I just wasn't sure if it was possible for the sun to fade the paint so much. If that is the case, I'm assuming the only way to get rid of the haze is to repaint it.

Re: Which products to use for detailing

That looks VERY similar to how Timmy's black WJ went. We tried everything on it, and nothing fixed it

Re: Which products to use for detailing

The problem is it's under the clear, and by the time you've buffed it back, it's stuffed anyway.

Re: Which products to use for detailing

yea looks like weather/sun damage to me. Alot of wj's nowadays are pretty beat up by previous owners not taking care of them and putting tons of miles on them.
