WJ - Detail of 2011 (Contains graphic images)

Hey,

So it was a beautiful day here today and although I was gonna wait until Spring before the first detail I couldn't resist.

Thankfully I had just enough products to do the job safely, but I now need to order in a lot of cleaning supplies.

The Jeep hasn't been cleaned since, Sept/Oct last year to prevent swirls due to rushed cleaning but to be honest it didn't look that bad.

1. Side

2. Wheel and arch

Gathered the following tools and chemicals:

Karcher PW,
2 buckets for body (1 with Zaino Z7 shampoo, 1 with a few squirts of meg's APC for rinse)
1 bucket for wheels and arches (with a few squirts of APC)
Foam gun with a strong mix of Ph neutral snow foam
Hose
3x lambs wool wash mitts,
2x wheel brushes,
1x tyre brush,
1x paint brush
8x microfibres
2x drying microfibres

On with the foam then...

After blasting that of, things got disturbing and made me rather upset...

Powdercoat has began to peel off all four wheels making them look like crap. Must be either reacting with the chrome that was underneath or it wasn't removed properly causing it to bubble.

I continued, trying to ignore the wheels. After giving it a good careful body wash, I discovered there was still a heap of glue residue from the vinyl which still needs removed.

After the body I cleaned the door jambs, interior (except glass since its pointless due to condensation at this time of year), dressed the trim, arches and tires.

Sorry for the crappy afters, it was dark and I was making do with one light.

Now I have the following problems to fix:

Glue residue, two keyed doors, broken reflector on rear bumper (reversed into a grit bin - always clear your windows), four wheels needing paint/powdercoat.

Going to think things over carefully, seriously considering downgrading my camera gear to free up a few grand to get my baby all minty again though.

Thanks for reading!

Damn dude! That sucks about your wheels! I'd be mad as hell! Powdercoating is meant to be almost bullet proof isn't it? She's still looking good though bud.

Re: WJ - Detail of 2011 (Contains graphic images)

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yeah Aaron, the whole idea on getting them powdercoated was so I can leave them on all year round without resorting to Summer/Winter wheels. Powdercoating is more or less bullet proof, it's what lies underneath that's the problem here.

Going to go back to the powdercoater and see what he says.

From a few feet back though, she doesn't look bad.

Re: WJ - Detail of 2011 (Contains graphic images)

Thanks Joe!

Decided, I'm downgrading my camera gear to get back on the Jeep. As soon as I have all the gear sold I'll be pondering over where I'm going with it.

A wheel refurb is more or less top of the list though!

Re: WJ - Detail of 2011 (Contains graphic images)

Well, after finally getting a break in work I managed to leave one hour early to see the powdercoating guy.

Good news! Wheels are getting redone next Thursday/Friday F.O.C.

Well, freeish. I'm going to get the re-done in glossy silver rather than matte black so he said it may cost a little extra 40 bucks or so.

Then, it's off to the bodyshop to get the key marks fixed. Woohoo! Spring is here and it's detailing time baby!

Re: WJ - Detail of 2011 (Contains graphic images)

Hi Irf, thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, I used a foam lance on the pressure washer to make the foam. A gilmore is pretty good if you have just a yard hose although you don't get it anywhere near that thick or clingly.

Jeep's booked into the bodyshop mid May with the crazy detail session booked in for the second week in July to allow the paint to cure etc before waxing it with the all precious Zymol...

Doing as much as I can before then though, undercarriage, wheels/brakes etc so it will just be poishing and waxing. Got a rotary on order this time to speed to process up too. Giving my dads truck a detail to practice whilst mines is in the bodyshop.

Re: WJ - Detail of 2011 (Contains graphic images)

Hahaha, yeah rotories are spoken of as fire breathing dragons. Once you pick one up and use it, really it's not anything scary. Although I did go on a 1 day course before I decided to use one, although that was 2 years ago now!

I just can't use the PC anymore for big jobs, the vibrations are just too much and yes the Meguair's MF pads look insane!

Yeah, still have 4oz of Vintage left, sold the other 4oz tub for my brake upgrade/repair but that'll last a while. It's actually been sitting in the fridge 3 years now.
