Cool Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

I have a 2006 SRT8 with 87,000 miles. Occasionally at high speed it has gone into limp mode for only a few seconds, and then corrected itself. Check engine light does not come on. Yesterday it went into limp mode at low speed and stayed that way until I stopped and restarted the ignition. It drove normally after that, as if something was reset. CEL again did not come on. Does anyone know cause and recommended fix? Am I in for a big repair? This is the best Jeep forum so I hope someone can help.

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

I have a 2007 SRT, mine would go into limp mode at low speeds, it happened once from the auto-stick mode, and twice in drive. Pulling away from a stop acceleration would just drop off and limp mode would show up. I was home on Christmas break and my roommate had my Jeep out with his wife and it died on them, dealer picked it up from the side of the road and replaced the transmission & torque converter under warrenty. I can post everything they looked at, I have all the paperwork at home.

get it checked out, last thing you want is to be pulling out into traffic and have the Jeep crap out on you and you get hit.

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

Thanks downstate. Don't worry about your paperwork because I'm way beyond warranty so anything they find I'll have to pay for. I'll have it checked out but was hoping it's something straightforward (like an electrical/mechanical connection) because the CEL doesn't come on.

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

Best of luck, I forgot to mention that my CEL did come on (forget the codes I pulled from it - prob on the forums here somewhere) I hear you on the warranty thing, dealer told me I had about a month left before my factory coverage ran out

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

it MAY be valuable to dee downstate part list or explain on his repair. no matter where you have it repaired his INFO could be helpful/

it could also be the shifter module/ ESM/ basically the part that the shifter moves. there are circuit boards in there where the contacts move over, it gets all black and junked/ can be taken apart and cleaned.....mixed results/ should be other threads a bout it here/

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

Found my old thread (ah the joys of online forums)

Below is a text copy of what was on my repair statement from the dealer.

(QTY) | NUMBER | DESCRIPTION

(1) 5174299AA CONVERTER
(1) 5139580AK SEAL PKG
(1) 52108308AC CONNECTOR
(1) 52108325AA FILTER TR
(5) 68058315AA DISC OUTE
(5) 52108573AA DISC INNE
(1) 52108141AB DISC INNE
(5) 52108528AA PISTON IN
(5) 52108529AA PISTON OU
(1) 68021352AA PLUG ADAP
(5) 52108141AB DISC INNE

Customer states when starting off the engine will rev but jeep will not move off right away. The check engine lite will come on and seems to go into limp mode.

Found K2 Clutch & Torque Convertor Failed

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

Thanks again downstate. That sounds like a huge repair out of warranty. I'll take Scottina's suggestion and try the key dance.

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

I did the key dance quite a few times and no codes popped up. Is it possible that something as serious as limp mode does not throw a code or activate the CEL? I then went on a 30 mile city/highway test drive and everything was normal, so I guess I'll see how far I can go before it happens again.

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

Maybe a stupid question, but are all of your battery cables and terminals tight??

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

I checked them. They seem tight. Would that cause limp mode?

Re: Limp Mode 2006 SRT8

a bad battery might /could/

when you put your key to ON BUT DO NOT START wait about 10-15 seconds ; does the CEL blink and bing or does it stay lit solid no blink at ll?

if it blinks you have codes.

the dance starts with the key on, door closed, then it off on, off on, off on, ending on on.

or go to autoparts and see what they come up with if anything at all. or your predator if you have one can read codes too.
