Suggestions on changing oil in the SRT8

im going to change the oil soon this week, and this will be my first change of the oil (im at 3000 miles)

what are some great brands to use when i change the oil in the SRT8?

what brands do you use for the filter? do i stick with a new stock mopar jump off? part # (mopar p/n 04884899AB)

how many quarts of oil do i purchase? keeping in mind that i like to leave 2 bottles of extra oil in the beast at all times. just something ive been doing for ages now.

now i hear often that changing the synthetic at 3000 is bad or what have yous is it really? should i really be doing it at 5-6000 miles?

i know joe did his at like 1500 give or take- after this weekend trip, im due up, even though, my instruments arent telling me to do so just yet.

cheers-

Re: Suggestions on changing oil in the SRT8

I ran Mobil1 in my stock engine, K&N filter. You'll need 7 quarts of oil. (9 quarts if you're going to carry 2).

Re: Suggestions on changing oil in the SRT8

I know some people in this thread are going to say I am wasting my money but I use Pennzoil Platinum 5-40 and change it every 3000 miles after the initial 1000 mile engine oil change. But due to me winning JOTM, I will be trying out Amsoil 5-40 I have sitting here. The SRT is due for a oil change soon. I will report back with results.

And as far as oil filters again I will be trying out the Amsoil but I use either Mobil-1 (p/n: m1-210) or K&N (http://store.knfilters.com/search/pr...x?Prod=HP-2010). Both can be picked up at any local auto supply store.

Its cheap protection. IMO

Fram are some of the worst filters you can buy, they're cheaper for a reason.

Re: Suggestions on changing oil in the SRT8

I don't have a SRT8. I am running a 2006 4.7 and 2005 3.7

But when I do changes I use amsoil. I buy the Wix Oil filter and an Amsoil EA Oil filter. Along with the Amsoil oil the stuff rated for 25,000 miles/1 year (the Amsoil filter is also rated at the same as the oil Sever service is rated for 15,000miles/ 1year) . I will do my full change and put the Wix filter on for about 2-3 weeks and then after that I will change the filter to the Amsoil filter and run that until the oil has about 7-8,000 miles/ 6months on it. Then I start the process all over. My theory is if I run the wix filter for about a 1,000 miles then I can help pull out any large contaminates out of the engine right away (if any) Then the amsoil filter can provide better protection when it is in there. Plus you get to add a little bit of clean oil in the process.

In the 3.7 I do the same thing but keep the oil in there 1 year because that jeep doesn't get the abuse or the miles.

I could probably run it longer, but I have a lot of lead in my foot so I make it up to my engine when I can. On my next change I think I will be getting an Oil Analysis done to see whats all in my oil.

Another thing... I used to use Mobil1 for my years leading up to Amsoil with real problems, but for me with running Amsoil it seems to be smoother and better running.

Re: Suggestions on changing oil in the SRT8

I use whatever synthetic oil is on sale at the time - Mobil1 or Valvoline Synthetic 5w-40. For filters I use Mobil1, K&N, or Purolator Pure One. If you're changing every 5k like most of us do here, you'll be fine.

As for break in, I've been told change at 1k or 3k. Probably doesn't really matter.
