03 2.4l engine

Hi, I need a replacement engine for the 2003 2.4l. Everyone is telling me the 03-06 2.4 is the same, but when I go to O'Reilly autozone etc they are telling me 03-04 and 05-06 are different part numbers. Dde6 and dde7. Anyone know the difference? I believe the 03 4cyl had a 5 spd Trans and not the 6spd so don't know if that has anything to do with it. Thanks. -Mitch

Re: 03 2.4l engine

Autozone is correct. The 2003-04 Jeep Wrangler 2.4 uses an entirely different ECU and the crank position sensor is in a different location also. 2005-2006 Wrangler 2.4's run the NGC (Next Generation Controller) ECU. The 2003-04 2.4 I think is called pre- NGC. The 2002-03 Jeep Liberty came with the pre NGC 2.4 and 2004-05 Liberty's came with the NGC. I myself have an 06 that has the 2.4 that I bought brand new so I've had it a while and have researched the engine pretty extensively.

If you end up putting in another type of engine (changing out to a 6 cyl, etc) and you still have the engine I might be interested depending on price and your location.
