2012 JKU failed nj inspection

Took my '12 JKU for nj state inspection and it failed due to a "known issue with the PCM/ECM." Nj even put a bulletin out to all nj inspection stations about the 12MY JKs. In the memo they gave me, it suggests contacting dealer for a computer reflash. The issue as I understand it is that the state's OBD scanner can't read the fuel system monitor, triggering an automatic failure.

Now I have to try explaining this to a dealer. Luckily they gave me a memo on inspection station letterhead. Anyone else have this happen? According to the folks at the inspection station, a lot of 12s have been affected, thus prompting the statewide memo.

2012 JKU failed nj inspection

How about doing the inspection at the dealer and let them figure it out. Should be the same price. At least in NY it is.

2012 JKU failed nj inspection

In nj, inspections at motor vehicle facilities are free. Also not all dealer service depts are licensed inspection centers, including the one I take mine to.

Just annoyed that if this was a known issue, why wasn't a recall or TSB issued? Here's a copy of the memo they gave me describing the issue...

That was going to be my question. Have you checked to see if there was an emissions recall on your vehicle? BTW, a TSB would simply be a field service hint from the factory on how to possibly fix it.

I wonder if this problem is also a federal issue? If only a NJ thing, and not federal or Californian, could be why FCA isn't bothered.

I just had the dealer do an overhaul (brakes, rotors, ujoints, diff/tcase fluid change) on this vehicle two months ago. No recall or TSB at that time as they would have flagged it.

Have an appointment for dealer service tomorrow. Will see what they say about this.

You could call them and mention the note from the test.
If they have no clue what you are talking about, you seriously might want to try another dealer who does--or a private mechanic.

I'm definitely bringing the memo as my JKU has 78k miles and I don't want to have to pay for this if it is a known issue. Luckily the dealer I go to has been great with this kind of stuff.

2012 JKU failed nj inspection

Well this is definitely a known issue and is not covered under the 8yr, 80,000 mile PCM warranty. So $300 later, my JKU is flashed, but now I need to run it for a few hundred miles and bring it back so they can retest and sign off. Then I have to bring it back through inspection.

Dealer says they've seen a lot of these and would bet a recall is coming soon.

Unfortunately, the Emissions Performance Warranty, which is what covers non-CA emission test failures, is only good for 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I am no expert, the way I read this, is if your PCM actually broke, it would be covered by the 8/80,000 Emissions Warranty. But since your PCM was still working, it falls under that other shorter warranty.

You are correct. The hope would be a recall and reimbursement. Dealer service says this is not only a NJ issue but only 2012 MY seem to be affected.
