2015 jk backup camera suggestions

I am a new member and LOVE the site ! Just got a new JK Willys but have a tight garage fit. Looking for suggestions and recommendations for a backup camera for it. I have the base radio (no nav).

Re: 2015 jk backup camera suggestions

There's a couple of threads at wranglerforum about this with what others have used. I'm doing the same thing myself when my jeep arrives, so I'll let you know. One thing I'm pretty sure of -- I'll keep my existing mirror (it has bluetooth mic), I won't clip a monitor over top of the mirror, but will mount a monitor on the dash.

Re: 2015 jk backup camera suggestions

I read a thread somewhere (maybe another forum) where the poster paid their dealer to install the camera from a Cherokee in their Wrangler. They had the 430 I believe, so the video came up on that. The dealer drilled a hole in the bumper for it to point through rather than using a spare tire area mount. You could see the bottom of the spare in the camera shot, but to me it was a pretty clean looking install and I like the idea of protecting the spare from the elements with a tire cover, so I'm likely to go a similar route once I know we have the 2016 JKU that we're keeping. People seem to like the MyGig Lockpick and there's one other device to help pipe the incoming video into the head unit if it has a usable screen.

I got a GPS based setup for my Suburban and it works ok. My biggest issue is I don't always grab the GPS receiver as I walk out the door, so the camera's useless. I did hook it into the reverse lights so it pops the GPS over to the rear view 1-2 seconds after putting the Suburban into reverse, so it was a pretty easy install (tapped the trailer hitch wiring for reverse) and with it being wireless up to the GPS, there wasn't much more to it. The price was right at less than $200 for the camera and the lifetime maps/traffic GPS (by Garmin). If you don't use the climate control much or can stand to block a vent, they have a vent mount for GPS receivers that seems mostly out of the way. I wonder about the vent staying in place when offroad or if the GPS bounces its way down to pointing at the shifter quite quickly...

Hope these couple of thoughts help.

The base radio on a Willys would be a 130, no?

GoPro, cell phone with the GoPro app and dash mount for the cell phone? Relocate it to the front for great trail riding video.

Yes, the base radio on a Willys is the 130 (no screen)

Re: 2015 jk backup camera suggestions

I also had the base radio and used a Garmin Nuvi 2798LMT with backup camera in my 2 door. I mounted it on the Rugged Ridge ball mount that bolts into the dash tray. I now have the Garmin Nuvicam with backup camera to install in my 4 door.

The 2798 worked great at backup camera duty and has voice activated navigation.

I also would to get a back up camera when I purchase my jeep. Can it be tied into my navigation screen? I see some mounted on the spare tire.

Jeep itself, doesn't have a backup camera for the Wrangler (factory or dealer). There are some kits (expensive!), and some do-it-your-self. As mentioned, there are dozen of forums where all the various options, techniques, camera locations, and personal opinions are given in great detail.

If you want to use your factory nav screen for a backup camera, you need to have it activated (which again, isn't normal for a Wrangler). One option is to have your selling dealer do it, but some dealers charge up to $100 to do this. Some people have gotten it "included" while they negotiated their price. What you need to ask for, is for dealer installed feature "XAC" to programmed into your Wrangler. Once activated, there is a new setup option on your Nav screen to turn it back off, which is what you can temporarily do, until you get around to actually installed the backup camera.
