Don't expect any new leather seats to have that durability. Leather is cut thinner these days and made softer because people want a supple seat feeling (let's not forget cutting cost and weight too).

I've been using this- http://www.meguiars.com/en/automotiv...erconditioner/ - for years, from livingroom sofas, to coats, boots, and car seats. It works well and softens the leather nice too. From what I've read in the Jeep forums, there have been issues with the leather seats cracking or splitting. I can't say if it's a material defect in the leather, treatment, or what - but I don't think it would hurt any to put this on. Splits and cracks in leather can be caused by drying, and if the leather dried after it was stitched, the stretch from 'breaking in' the seats could crack or split it in theory. I say that because you would think the manufacturer would take that into effect when making the seat, but they may have figured there would be more give, etc. then there is.

I treated the steering wheel on the TJ twice a year, very thick coat too, and let it soak in for 24 hours before wiping it off again. Never had issues.

I noticed two things about the JK steering wheel. First, they decided to use a matte finish. It looks good, but it wears horrible. Within months I had small nicks in the bottom of the wheel from getting in or out - my pants and coat zipper would rub it as I moved across the seat. My girl's ring has scratched the leather on the wheel too as she made a turn. Not good.

I know they made it matte for the look, and possibly to keep the sun glare off, and keep the heat buildup low, but the leather is wrong. I talked to my service manager about replacing the wheel under warranty, but then realized what that entailed, and I don't need a screwed up steering column either (knowing the techs).

At this point I'm putting a cover on it. If they had thought more about it, they would have used a thicker, fine grain waxed suede - like you would see on work boots. The finish would be matte, and it would be durable and you wouldn't get or see scratches and nicks. Or go with a full grain 3oz hide. It looks like they used a bonded, 1oz, garment hide or something.

Leather wrapped steering wheels have been horrible for the last 10 years, probably more. I had a 04 GTi with one, and in 3 years, looked like hell... But I guess its one more selling point of the base Sport...

I never really had such a problem. The leather steering wheel in my '03 Mustang still looks like new. All I do is clean and treat it periodically, as I do the seats.

Ditto for my '99 XJ. Still looked like new when I sold it years later.

I agree... If you get leather you got to maintain it, its 10-15 to condition the seats... I opt for leather in all my vehicles and hve never had a problem. For the jeep I plan on using trek armour seat covers in the summer due to fact I know I'm gonna be getting dirty/sweaty and done want the wear on the seats... Treat the leather right it will last decades..

I got a 10 year old Suburban 5 years ago that had leather seats (And 100,000 miles) - the leather was pretty firm and the surface was worn off where people slid in and out of the seat. I started a leather cleaning/conditioning regimen and the firmness has certainly gone way down. Obviously no amount of cleaning/treating will fix destroyed leather. We have leather in our 5 year old van and I clean/treat it once a year if I remember. It's looking almost brand new (which is saying something with two small kids). My '06 GTO I picked up with 35,000 miles and the leather looks pretty good, so I'll keep up a routine there as well.

...but as I said earlier, the seat covers in the 04 Rubicon are maintenance free (although they look like excrement 10 years later, they're still doing their job).

...So I honestly believe it boils down to proper maintenance of the interior of the car will work wonders regardless of the materials as long as there's not a spot that is constantly rubbed during ingress and egress.

Thanks! I couldn't find the paint code, so very helpful - I had been worried another color might have slipped through.
