FCA is making a mint on Wranglers, that's for sure.
I think part of the sales boom is backlash to the increase in government mandated CAFE standards. People don't want to be told what they can and can't drive, and don't want the government's fingers in their Wrangler soup.
But the introduction of the Rubicon (starting as the most capable vehicle on the planet and evolving into the luxury trim) and the 4-door JKU have expanded the market exponentially.
Problem is, Quality Control isn't really reflecting the incessant price bumps. Considering many of the engineering foibles, some of the cheap outsourced parts and components, and the poor fuel economy...Wranglers are now overpriced.
Perhaps FCA is slowing increasing prices to test the limits of how much they can set the base prices for the JL? The redesign is going to mean higher prices with significant changes, and that's a threat to current profits. Or, they are expecting revenue loss for the first couple years of the JL and are grabbing as much cash as they can before the redesign!
But, if we want one...there is no alternative.
It's a good racket.
