2016 JKU Stereo Questions

I need to be incremental about my upgrades due to cash flow, but this stock radio (with UConnect) is unbelievably crappy in so many ways. The one positive that I'd like to keep (surprisingly) is the factory Bluetooth. Even with the sunrider open and back window rolled up, I can talk at 70 MPH no problem.

-I recently saw a YouTube video that suggests wiring for premium audio is in place whether I have it or now. If this is true, that makes my life REALLY easy. I already have a sub in a cabinet with an amp attached that I built for my TJ. Can anyone confirm or deny this? They showed a plug in the right rear.
-it kills me that power is interrupted when the starter engages. I travel a lot for work, so I often stop to make calls, answer emails, etc., so currently I leave it running to keep BT connected. What a waste! I dug up a wiring diagram that showed there's a gray wire in the harness labeled "starter interrupt". It would be too easy, but can I just cut that wire to eliminate this "feature" and keep power to the radio when the starter turns?
-If I can get my hands on a Wrangler with premium audio, aside from just the speakers, is there an external amp somewhere if have to pull? I work in the car industry, so it's quite possible I could do this on the cheap as long as I do the labor.
-Are the two notches in the back of the center console actually noise cancelling microphones for the BT as I've been told? That would explain a lot about the unexpected clarity of calls.

Thanks, in advance!

Edit: YES, the wiring is there for the factory sub (at least in the back). One 8-wire plug and one three-wire plug (though only two wires). I did a current test with and without ignition on, and the two wires do not have power. I'm going to check the fuse box to see if there's just a missing fuse since I didn't check that box on the order sheet.

Make sure you get an amp from either a '15 or a '16. Its different from that used in '14 and earlier (less channels).

No.

They are grills for the motion detectors offered only on the export (European) versions. If you check out yours, they should be empty.

Just to note, the '16 (and the '15 too) is wired for a four voice coil sub, driven by four separate channels of the optional Alpine external amp.

Re: 2016 JKU Stereo Questions

Thanks Walt - all good info! That makes me think it's really likely that the 8-pin connector is for all 4 channels, now just need to investigate whether they're line level or powered. Shouldn't be too tough, particularly if they're actually hooked up under the dash at the other end. The 3-pin connector (with only two wires) I'll have to guess is power. May be enough depending on the draw of the amp.

Do you have a 12v outlet ("cigar lighter") in the rear cargo area? I don't know if this is still true for '16, but at one time, the unrelated rear sub and the rear power outlet were "linked"; you got both or neither.

Based on this, I would guess that the 3-pin connector is for the 12v outlet, and not something intended to power the sub or some amp in the cargo area (all the amps are up front).

Re: 2016 JKU Stereo Questions

I don't have a 12v in the back. So the sub amp from the factory is in the front too? Just trying to get a feel for whether I can use any of this existing wiring or if it will be easier to just run new wires. At some point, I'll add a 4-channel amp and replace the factory speakers as well.
