The use/availability of the 8 speed may be more nuanced than that. A long stroke (stroke is equal or larger than the bore diameter) diesel will likely have a much longer, larger torque curve (more area under the curve) with lower RPM and not benefit, I would even hazard a guess that absent electronics to make better shift decisions it's more of a detriment actually, with that many gear options. On the other hand, the pentastar 3.6 L is a short stroke engine (stroke is shorter than the bore diameter). Short stroke engines usually have smaller, shorter torque curves (less area under the curve) and have a higher RPM (they trade displacement for RPM to generate power). These engines benefit from more gearing options. i.e.; The so called "power band" of a long stroke engine, all things being equal, is wider than a short stroke engine.

So if there is a diesel option, it's not going to benefit from 8 speeds, again absent electronics that will balance economy with torque under load v. low load conditions differently. That said, economics may drive this decision and they may not want to run two sets of transmissions for the two engine options.

This logic would be correct for a long stroke vs short stroke on a gas motor, but doesn't hold water on a diesel. The new transmissions can change gears faster than a diesel can wind up, not to mention the lower red line of a diesel. Tractor trailers have 21 and 24 speed transmissions for a reason.

Trucks have many gears because they run from 30K pounds empty to 80K pounds with cargo. That would take a 4K pound wrangler and make it 11K pounds loaded. The latter is not happening. And stroke/bore ratio logic holds for steam engines as well as diesel. It's not specifically a cause of power, but incidental to efficiency and what drives the tuning options chosen when an engine is designed.

Anyhow, whatever decision they make, it may not include mating that transmission with that engine, or it may. Just butting in to tamp expectations. I will go away now.
