Re: 2018 Wrangler XX Information Thread

... whatever it is they have up their sleeves, this just heightened the suspense factor a few notches on the Likert-o-scale...

Re: 2018 Wrangler XX Information Thread

Purely speculation here, but I have seen the comments (rumors?) that the new transmission is too long to fit in the 2 door. Maybe the 2 door will live on in a "classic" form?
Not to start rumors, but if that's the case, perhaps this will become the new model designations... since they may not share the same transmissions.

JL = long wheelbase
JS = short wheelbase

Well the new 2018 JL will be running down the Toledo north assembly plant which leaves the JK to continue to run down Toledo south as a 2018 in a limited form until they retool for the pickup. There has been articles regarding both generations running in parallel.

Re: 2018 Wrangler XX Information Thread

I believe it. Seems weird though to create a new designation for an extended run of the out-going platform. I wonder if it will end up some kind of bastard with perhaps some elements of the new platform. Maybe JL electronics in the JK body. Maybe even drivetrain. They made it work in the test mules. Maybe that longer hood will be used.

Perhaps they are expecting some backlash and are looking to soften the transition? I can see how a significant change in, say, how the removeable top is implemented could upset long time Jeep enthusiasts.

While anything is 'possible', I really don't think that will be the case as it's just too costly and complicated from a production/manufacturing standpoint.
My guess is that the 2018 XX/JK will be identical to the 2017 other than a few colors and perhaps the elimination of some packages/models.

You have to wonder why anyone would opt for the JL. The styling hasn't changed enough to make it obvious as a new model on the street, so what are you paying for? A top that doesn't come off? A windshield that doesn't fold down? A 4cyl base engine?

The diesel engine and the pick-up when it comes along are about the only two things I can see someone opting for the JL for over a JK. But my guess is they are not going to make a JK 4 door, just the 2 door as a "classic" to keep Toledo from being sacked and burned by an angry mob of flannel wearing purists.

Every model change this happens. Yes, I will get a JL. Lots of others will also.

You cannot base what you have seen so far as what will be actually built.

The new 4 cylinder will have more power then the Pentastar 3.6l.

Diesel and pickup models? Yes I want the diesel but would never buy the pickup. That's just me. I'm sure I'm not alone. Yes, the pickup will sell, just not to me.

Having just ordered a new 2017 JK, I am in NO hurry to see (or like) the new JL LOL, the longer it takes to be revealed/debut the better. :D
I'm hoping some of the (bad) rumors are true, no more full soft top/convertible, no more roll bar, no more folding windshield etc.
I do want the new JL to be a sales success but I'm also hoping for it to lack some various elements/features that help keep used JKs desirable and in demand as well.
We do know that there will be some weight saving measures in the new JL.
But that still doesn't mean that the vehicle will be lighter overall than the current JKs/JKUs. It could just mean that the weight savings are being incorporated to offset/counter other potential weight gains for safety/impact/crash worthiness reasons as well.

Highly highly unlikely and doubtful. My guess is that the 2018 JK will be IDENTICAL to the 2017, except for a couple of color changes maybe. Probably even fewer model/'special edition' choices as well I'd bet.

I agree, that's somewhat along the lines of what I was thinking as well. Considering that the JK two-door will only be built into roughly March of next year, model year 2018 will likely be a very short run for two-door Wranglers...get 'em while ya can. :D
