6 Speed or Auto for 2015 JK??

I'm sure this horse has been beat to death over the past few years. I am looking to order a '15 JK Sahara and always thought I would order a 6 Sp. manual, no questions asked. But I have read of some unhappy folks with the manual tranny, clutch noise, jerky, etc.
I like the thought of a manual tranny for that real jeep feel. Any input on the latest trannies, greatly appreciated. Although I live in a large city, Jax, FL, this is a 3rd vehicle toy so I am not so concerned about driving in traffic with obvious manual considerations. More on performance and reliability issues is where my decision comes into play.

Re: 6 Speed or Auto for 2015 JK??

I've driven several Wranglers and CJs from various years. Every single last one has been jerky with the exception of the newer JKs... and I think the only reason why it's not as bad as the previous versions is because of the extended wheelbase.

It's probably just a Wrangler thing. The transmission is the Daimler NSG-370...

Re: 6 Speed or Auto for 2015 JK??

Me personally, for faster cars like my BMW 335xi and my ford mustang GT (supercharged) they have stick. I didnt want stick on my truck/jeep especially since it may see some traffic and my lady will drive it as well

Re: 6 Speed or Auto for 2015 JK??

I'm with Astylz on this one.

I'm a huge manual fan, and agree with the "Save the Manuals" campaign. I've only ever owned cars with stick, however I've also only owned a truck and my current Jeep w/AUTO.

I tested both before my recent order, and while I didn't find the Rubicon 6-spd jerky or difficult (except going into 5th for some reason, but it was a used 2012 w/72k miles), I was surprised to be shifting into 4th gear around 35 MPH. That is a lot of shifting for in-town/city driving.

My wife can drive stick just fine, so that wasn't even a factor in the decision. In the end for us it came down to the convenience of AUTO.

As funny as it sounds, one of the reasons we almost didn't opt for the AUTO was the stick is becoming a major theft deterrent, as a lot of thieves can't even drive them.

Good luck.

If you want to go crawler, I would go with an Auto.... If not you're probably not going to be at much of a disadvantage unless you're horrible with a clutch.

Re: 6 Speed or Auto for 2015 JK??

I just ordered a 6-spd Rubi today. For me, a manual tranny is what makes a Jeep a Jeep. Also, it's a toy, not a commuter. That helps a lot.

Re: 6 Speed or Auto for 2015 JK??

The 3.6 isn't super torquey, but it's an easy engine to lug with a manual. 35mph in 4th? I'm often in 6th at 35 if traffic permits :-) I also find myself skipping gears most of the time running 1-2-4-6.

The 6 speed is more fun in the 2 door than the JKU, but even so, I prefer it to the 5 speed auto. That said, the 5 speed is WORLDS better than the 4 speed was from 07-11. The auto 5 makes driving my wife's Jeep bearable...but the old 4 speed just about convinced her to get a manual when we trades her 08 for the 13

I agree with that statement, and because of that, I ordered my first Wrangler with a manual trans (well, I guess, technically, I simply didn't order the auto option).

I love manuals. But that seems to be a unique taste.

I typically don't have any problems selling my old vehicles. I take really good care of them, and I find a buyer within days, if not hours, after putting them up for sale.

Not so my first Wrangler. Even though my ad stated pretty clearly that it had a manual trans, everyone who came to look acted so surprised when they noticed the stick, and simply walked away. It look me months to sell it. It took that long to find a buyer who loved manuals too, and had no problem with a "loaded up" Wrangler with a manual trans.

I learned my lesson. My current Wrangler has an auto trans.
