88 YJ transfer case swap

I have a quick question for the experienced Jeepers... I have an 88 wrangler with the 231 t case that is shot..making lots of bearing racket.. I found a cheap t case from an 01 XJ.. its the 242.. I don't do much big mudding or mistreating my Jeep.. Is the 242 from this newer model a direct swap? My Jeep is automatic with the 258 and vacuum disconnect front end.. this guy said the xj was auto with the 4.0.. any help would be appreciated!

I believe the 231 is CommandTrac (part time 4WD only) and the 242 is SelecTrac (full time + part time 4WD).

However, the 242 is larger (longer by ~ 3"?) than the 231 because of the extra hardware required for the full time operation, which is why Jeep never offered the 242 on any of its Wranglers. It may not fit the very short drivetrain of the 2-door.
