Any YJ feedback?

Hey All, I've seen a pretty good deal on a YJ already with a 4" lift. Any owners have anything good or bad to say. I know they used to be called yuppie jeep but it still has the straight six I loved in my old CJ-7.

Re: Any YJ feedback?

I used to do alot with wranglers, had a YJ for the longest time before i got my TJ. post some pictures and specs ill do an online check for you..lol

the only downside to the YJ was the vacuum lock front axle shaft. But its an easy fix. you can either cable control it, or get a used TJ pass side axle shaft to replace it and close off the vacuum system. Besides that they are as good as any other jeep, JK excluded.. :P

Re: Any YJ feedback?

There weren't any pics. I've just seen it on the side of road. If I get serious about it i'll send the info. What was the problem front axle shaft did it lock up, or not come out of 4x4?
Thanks for the info!

Re: Any YJ feedback?

the problem was that once you put it in 4wd it had a vacuum controled front axle. In the old theory of things it worked great, but with real world driving and aging its a failing system that on the majority of days would decide not to work leaving you without real 4wd. But like i said theres a couple of cheap fixes for it. The TJ axle shaft upgrade will only run about $30 from a junkyard. besides that it was an awesome jeep and a great project plat form.

I had a YJ and have had two TJ's. I liked the YJ the best for simple durability.

that is a good piece of info, i found that out the hard way. I went away for a few days and while i was gone my dad decided to take the emissions control stuff off my 89 YJ. When i got back i took it on the beach the next day and lets just say it didnt go so well... thats a good bit of info about the TJ axle, i might end up doing that sometime.

But as far as feedback on the YJ, mine is great, its the 4.2L I6 engine and she handles like a champ on the beach (now that the 4wd works), mileage is not too terrible, but nothing stellar. if you have a carb with and Electronic fuel mix control, which i think started somewhere around 86, you will want to replace it and get a standard carb that you can adjust, if you dont then the electronics go bad and then you get like 12 mpg. thats the only thing i can think of that is a problem at all
