are all Wrangler rear ends limited slip?

Thinking of trading my '11 Grand Cherokee for a '13 Wrangler Unlimited. The one I agreed to buy had the $300 option of a non-slip rear end, which I assume is some sort of limited slip or locking differential. Is this option a special type? Are all of the Wrangler rear ends some type of limited slip? Any input is appreciated because I don't want a four wheel drive that really only has one of the two rear wheels driven at all times.

Unless you get a base model 4wd, or even a 2wd, most of the Wranglers have an electric rear locker. They usually have a Dana 44 rear end and then a Dana 30 front w/o a locker....unless you get the Rubicon, which of course has the D44 front end w/ lockers and electric sway bar disconnect.

I am getting the Sahara trim level. The rear locker feature is only while in four wheel drive, right? So it probably has an otherwise open rear differential with one wheel driven while in two wheel drive mode without the anti slip option?

Could be right. Sadly, I don't know the answer to that one. I have a Rubicon so I'm locked and loaded.

On a side note.....if you end up getting it, you should come to the Texas JK meets once a month. 1st Wednesday of the month (last night actually) in Grapevine. Usually 30-50 rigs there at a time. Check out the site, too. TexasJK.com

The JK has an open rear diff unless you have Trac-Loc (non Rubicon). I would guess it locks up whenever there is wheel slippage.

This is from the Jeep website:

TRAC-LOKŪ DIFFERENTIALThe Trac-LokŪ rear differential is available on select Wrangler Unlimited Sport and Sahara models. It's a torque-sensitive mechanical unit that works to maintain traction in slippery or rough conditions. Trac-Lok automatically distributes the available rear torque to the rear wheel that provides the most traction, thus helping to reduce wheel spin caused by lack of traction in the other rear wheel.

Finally got a fairly detailed email back from Jeep that answered my question. Turns out that the Trac-lok on the Sahara is an open differential unless you pay for the non slip option, which then gives you a limited slip rear end in 2 wheel drive mode. However, in 4wd mode, the rear is electronically locked and all four wheels are engaged.

Was glad to get the email with the good info. Tried calling their "info" line and got some guy who asked what kind of limited what did I want on my Jeep when I asked about the limited slip rear lol

That doesn't sound correct. The Rubicon is the only model that has electronic lockers. Trac-Lok is a mechanical locker.

I'm pretty sure the Sahara has an electronic rear locker. As well as certain other non-base models. As I don't really have any experience with anything less than the Rubicon, though, I'm not 100% certain.

I know you can get them with no lockers at all.

Rubicon rear lockers are activated by the button left of the steering wheel. Sahara's don't have these.

I just would hate to see someone get a vehicle thinking they had an option like this, then not have it.

Just buy a Rubicon and don't worry about it again. Then you know you have everything you need.

I stand corrected. If you don't get the option of the limited slip rear end, then you have an open differential at all times in the rear. What is electronic is when you engage the shift lever to the 4wd mode, and it will electronically engage both the front and the rear axles at a 50/50 ratio. There is some electronic braking in 4wd mode to keep both wheels spinning at about the same speed, but when it comes down to it you have to get the non slip option to have a limited slip rear differential.

Bought the Sahara without the non slip rear option last weekend and am loving it so far. Not a serious off roader so probably won't ever know the difference. Hope this little trivia tidbit helps those inquiring minds.
