Talking Black wheels question

Between reading posts about offsets, backspacing, leveling kits, and the like, my brain is spilling out my ears! So, thought I'd present my question, seeing if someone can help me out. I'll be ordering a 17 JK Sport S, which comes with 17 x 7.5 wheels. I don't like the silver wheels, and don't want to take the route of painting, plastidip, or other ways to make them black. With our planned use (mostly DD, and some gravel road trips), don't see us lifting our Jeep, so I'm looking to replace the wheels with a full black wheel very similar in structure to the original, without spending a fortune. I see most aftermarket wheels show offsets of 4.5 or lower, meaning a change in tracking if I understand it correctly. Any ideas as to something pretty close to OEM specs? Does a 4.0 or 4.5 offset make a huge difference, if staying with the same size tire? I'm just a bit confused, and the more reading I do, the more confused I get!
Call me a noob, that's OK...because I am!
George

Re: Black wheels question

The factory backspacing is 6.25", if you go with something with less your tires will stick out further, but I don't think it should noticeably alter driving characteristics.

As an alternative to aftermarket you could try to pick up a set of Willys wheels on CL if you like the look of them.

I've been keeping my eyes open for Willy's, Black Bear, and the full black Ruby's, but none so far. Good thing, I haven't pulled the trigger on the order yet, so I've got some time!

Re: Black wheels question

I wonder if we'll see another Black Wheel option for the Sport in 2017?

Re: Black wheels question

I bought a set of american racing wheels for my 2013 it doesn't look like the OEM but they're cheap and I haven't had a single problem with them. So if you're looking for cheap wheels they're the way to go.

Re: Black wheels question

Same boat. There are quite a few things on WW-W I do not want, including the M/T tires (I have to go WW-W or sport S to get side airbags as they are not option on WW), but I really feel the Rhino looks way better with black wheels.

I will only address the option of getting the actual WW wheels on a 2017 Sport/Sport S/Sahara, as you have answers on non Mopar wheels.

1) Cast offis. WW cast offs are actually very rare and usually include heavy duty M/T. Looking at cragislist hits, black www castoffs tend to be $600 to $800 used for five, about $1k new, at most $1200 new with new tires included. The thing is as craigslist is local, one seller in Texas, one in Alabama, one in Florida and one in Maine are no help if you are in Oregon or Cali. I think it might take six months to find a set if you checked craigslist every day! Online Jeep forums have some, but also very rare and as they are a btch to ship the sellers want local buyer.

2. As a data point, I have found that at a starting point actual new Mopar WW wheels are sold by many of official Mopar parts sellers at about $420 list, $360 normal easy discount -- each. So $1,800 for five, $1,900 delivered. I don't see anyone sane spending that but that is a starting point to know that is the most you would have to spend if you could never find cast of or alternative and wanted that exact wheel.

3. I have contacted four dealers I am already corresponding with concerning 2017 pricing, asking them price to swap out on delivery. The serious dealers who are offering 4% to 7% under invoice for a 2017 order, are quoting me $1,300 to $2,000 to swap WW wheels onto a Sport S. i don't understand the $2,000 quote, as the wheels direct from FCA are $1,800 discounted retail means dealers are getting them for maybe $1,600 to $1,650 wholesale and they get to keep my five new the Sport S cast offs worth about $500 wholesale.

I am not saying getting the offical WW wheels is best option, but that is my research for that option.

Finally Rubicon cast offs are considerably more common, but they are lighter in color, and as you purpose, like mine, is to move to dark color, is to go to black, they are not as valuable to us.

Re: Black wheels question

Thanks for all of the replies! On CL, I did find a set of Willys take off's in the Dallas TX area (I live in southern MO), including the M/T tires (which weren't necessarily needed, but were brand new), and got the set of wheels and tires for $1,100. Figuring it included the set of M/T tires as well (which the last time I looked on tirerack were retailing at $190 each), I took a drive down this week to pick them up. Very sharp looking wheel, IMO, and since we've ordered a Hypergreen 2 door Sport S earlier in the week, and we plan on installing a number of black options on it, this is the look I was going for, and again IMO, well worth the drive down and back. I figured I got new OEM wheels at about a 35% discount, and a free set of tires. Got them sitting in my barn just waiting for my JK to be built!

Very good and about the mean of prices I have seen. The issue is finding them when they do come up. congrats!

Re: Black wheels question

It was about an 8 hour drive for me each way, and I ran down immediately after having a tooth extracted...but for me it was well worth it. Now they sit in my barn, waiting for my Jeep to be built, but I go out and give them some live every now and then 😁

Check with a dealership. I asked a salesman friend the other day at our jeep dealer what they do with those wheels. They recently lifted a rubicon and put the big wheels on it. He said some times they use them to replace the steel wheels on sports but that he also thought they may sell them. Wouldn't hurt to ask =)

Those are grey or two tone and not uncommon. Full black like Black Bear or Willys as the OP asked, are very very uncommon. You will find 100 Rubicon casts offs like your example for every Black Bear or Willys cast off set.

Re: Black wheels question

Aren't the back country wheels basically the rubicon wheel, but black? I can't tell. They look like they are. I like the Rubi wheels, either way.
