Color Top Option or Not?

Trying to decide if I should get the color top option on my new 2015 Rubi Hard Rock or standard Black top. She will be Black Clear coat. How's the paint jobs on these? Does the Clear coat lit off after 10 years like my 1997 Dodge Ram? The standard top would hold up better for branch scratches. Thoughts? Thanks.

Re: Color Top Option or Not?

I would be worried that with the gloss black body in direct comparison, the standard black top would look like the clear coat has already pealed off (or was forgotten).

Re: Color Top Option or Not?

I went with the black top on a Baja yellow. My thinking is that if I ever wanted to sell the top, the black would retain more value and appeal. In your case you may want the full black look. Fenders too? However, the cost saved could easily be used on other features...

Re: Color Top Option or Not?

They've been selling gloss black JK's with standard black tops since the 2007 model year and I've never heard anyone complain that the top looked faded or unpainted...though I know some consider the painted top to look more flashy, finished, or whatever.

Personally, I don't spend money on aesthetics unless it actually improves function as well (new wheels, for example), so a painted top would do me no good (as mentioned, doesn't handle tree scrapes as well).

That being said, one local dealer started painting hard tops just to make an extra few bucks on some sales, way back in 2009.

My wife and I were sitting in her then lifted black JKU with the taupe hard top laughing at a Blue Jeep with a painted hard top when a salesman approached us and said, "Those painted tops look great, don't they? They make the Jeep look just like a Hummer!"

To which my wife snapped back, "Look what I'm driving. If I wanted a Hummer, I'd buy one. That thing is ridiculous." His jaw dropped and we drove away.

Re: Color Top Option or Not?

I wasn't a fan of painted tops when they first came out. Over time I appreciate some painted top combinations. I live in S Florida and a friend of mine bought a white JK with white painted top. I have a white with standard black top... yeah it makes a difference. That combination is practical.

Re: Color Top Option or Not?

My husband has a 2013 MOAB Edition in Black and got the standard black top. His feeling was why spend the money on a color matched top when the Jeep is already black.

I personally don't care for the color matched hard top look because I think it makes the Wrangler look more like a regular boring SUV. Part of what makes a Jeep a Jeep is the black top (hard or soft).

Just bought mine March 30th, didn't buy it because of the matched top but because AEV already did everything to it that I would have and with a warranty. I actually really like the look with the matched top in hydro blue. Only an idiot would mistake it for a Hummer and never while wheeling.

Re: Color Top Option or Not?

My '09 had a black hardtop and I could feel the heat coming down onto my head from that thing. I did install an aftermarket headliner-type setup that made it much bearable - from your experience, would you expect a white hardtop to be more effective in heat reduction than a headliner?

I wasn't specifically comparing it to a Hummer, but just SUV's in general. In my opinion it just looks more like a boring SUV or the Patriot or Commander. For me what makes a Wrangler a Wrangler is the black top, whether it be hard or soft.

Big Cat, Your Jeep looks great though!

Guess my spiced topped '97 TJ was never a real wrangler in your world then either

No...I shouldn't have said just a black top...I was just thinking of the current generation, since the sand color isn't an option any more, or at least I don't see any on the road. I didn't mean to offend you and I apologize if I did. Both of your Jeeps are REAL Wranglers. I was just simply reiterating my opinion.

Don't worry, not offended at all, and agree with to each their own. Was just pointing out the problem with generalizations.

It used to be that a black top and fenders meant that you just had a basic run of the mill wrangler rather than a Sahara, now there are X, Sport, Sahara, Rubicon, Hard Rock etc. etc.
