computer updates

i took my 2015 jkur in for an oil change yesterday. the dealer immediately told me that there were powertrain controller updates to be done. since my jeep is under warranty i said go ahead. just wondering if the dealer is "scamming" FCA because the workorder said "customer states check engine light on, applied 1 pcm update" then had "warranty" in the price column.

does anyone where i can find tsb's or a listing of these updates. i would like to get an idea of what the patch was supposed to fix/enhance..

The dealer wrote the work order that way because FCA requires a customer "complaint" before it will reimburse the dealer for a TSB related software update.

Be grateful that you have a dealer who'll proactively apply TSB updates when they find them available instead of waiting for you to complain about a problem first.

Re: computer updates

I always ask to get them done. There are various bug fixes /tweeks depending on component. Not aware of any specific release notes. They are flashing firmware. Depending on the module being flashed (tranny, drivetrain, body, hvac, etc. ) different things might get changed. For example I'm on my 3rd or 4th flash to improve crappy shifting. Finally no issues so it seems they finally got it right.

Some people are "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" I like to get them done especially it is for free. Some manufactures charge extra for service like that ...

Re: computer updates

Are dealers supposed to charge do do these software updates when the vehicle is out of warranty?

They wanted $135 to update/flash 3 components. These are akin to software updates. Why would Jeep or any other manufacturer charge to update their software? Could you imagine if Apple wanted to charge to update the software of their iPhones?

Re: computer updates

I had a similar experience with my 2013. Granted the "flash" was cheaper - $100, but the Jeep was out of warranty. I didn't know of an issue and it seemed normal so I thought an update was silly or a way to make $100 for something that should be free (at least to me).

Hi Dom2011--once your vehicle is outside of the basic warranty, the dealership is able to charge for the updates. It is at dealership discretion at that point.
