Do the 2017 black JKU's have paint issues?

Hello all- have seen a thread on the "other" jeep forums talking about substantial paint issues going on with 2015-2017 black JKU's. The response from FCA has not been encouraging, and it also appears to be linked to one of the 6 paint tunnels at the factory (black) possibly not being changed out like some of the other limited colors.

From my observations, the black seems to be the culprit and some dealerships are reimbursing the owners after inspecting their Jeeps.

After having just ordered a 17' black Recon (because I'm too impatient to wait for a 2nd year JL), I'm hoping that the issue is an exception not a rule that I can inspect before I drop the cash on the vehicle..

In the meantime I'm going to drive to a DC area dealer and see if I can spot any general problems myself.

I can say for sure the Granite had issues as I had to have my dealer repaint my two right side doors to eliminate 2 crop circles. This was not from the paint booth but rather over sanding etc. Many have complained about poor paint from the factory with things like contaminates in the paint to under coating around the hinges etc. Some folks have posted here that some other colors were so bad that they had to have it replaced.

Wow- that's bad. I really appreciate your response. I am going in to Koon's Tyson's this week to take a closer look. They have been great and I don't want drama but I may have to warn them if it comes with issues on the paint I'm not going to take my Recon which is being built now. At that price, its too much not to care what I'm getting.

I really wish there was a way to let Toledo know they are asking for trouble when they slack on the quality control, especially on the paint..

Honestly there are far fewer paint issues aside from the usual contaminates which many coming out of the plant have. These are just tiny specs that get under the clear coat during drying and are hard to see. Those you will need to live with otherwise I suggest not getting a JEEP etc.

That sounds good bbqpork. I can live with some minor blemishes as it is a Jeep. I'm only concerned about larger scale issues that have me concerned. I've already noticed some of the issues I've read about aren't issues to me. Bigger issue to me would be rust prevention behind hinges as I live near sal****er and don't want rust. I'm not looking to split hairs.

Fluidfilm will be your best buddy then. Coat the underbody and hinges avoiding the brakes and exhaust.

Re: Do the 2017 black JKU's have paint issues?

Just went by a different (closer) dealer last night to look for paint issues and.. didn't find anything major. I'd be happy with what I saw last night. I become more interested in how nice the 2.5" AEV lift looked!

Definitely interested in fluidfilm.. trying to find someone who can apply it for me in the DC/Maryland area.

You can apply the fuildfilm yourself, it comes in cans or a gallon. The gallon has a kit that you can use a compressor to spray it. I have done it twice already and it's not that hard to apply given the hight of the Jeep already.

I got a quote for $400 to have it done for my JKU
