Re: do you lock the doors on your soft top?

I have seen these opportunistic thieves in action. Usually junkies looking for quick cash. They walk from car to car trying the door handles. The unlocked ones will be entered. Not something I would like. And any minor damage they may cause will not be worth the insurance claim.

Goes back to what they might steal in my Jeep. Less than a $1 in pocket change, a tire gauge, and a bag full of Bible study materials. I don't drive a bank vault, I don't treat it like one

If a thief wants that stuff, obviously they need it.

Though I'd hate to lose it. That particular Bible has been almost around the world with me...

Re: do you lock the doors on your soft top?

I was keeping change in the little cup in front of the cup holders next to the hand brake. One day I thought it was odd that the change was gone. Next day I saw footprints on my rear seats. Someone climbed in when I had the top down and grabbed the change in the holder. I'm more annoyed by the footprints on my rear seats than the $2 in change. I also live in Chicago so not much surprises me.

One thing to keep in mind is your insurance. Locked doors on a soft top Jeep may seem pointless but your insurance company might have a different take on that. If you don't lock the doors and someone steals your Jeep you might find your insurance company less than willing to pay out for the stolen vehicle. It's been my observation that insurance companies will look for any way to reduce payouts.

I vote for locked doors.

If the Jeep is stolen, and it's a soft top Jeep, how is the insurance company going to prove it was unlocked?

I don't know that they could prove it. But if the insurance company or the police asked me I would be glad to be able to tell them "yes the doors were locked". The police do ask, they will also ask if you left the keys in the vehicle. Happens pretty often according to a friend of mine in law enforcement.

Re: do you lock the doors on your soft top?

I lock our 2004 with the hard top and (full) doors on. soft top with or without windows I don't bother. Probably will go the same on our 2016. I try to keep it empty of valuables, but I've also been cautious and started leaving a tire plug kit and compressor in the 04 since there's a plugged nail hole close to the sidewall and I'm not 100% sure I can trust it (but they don't make that size Duratrac anymore ) I figure the 2016 will largely be empty unless we're doing things and then we'll likely employ the "put blanket over stuff" mechanism to at least make it not too tempting.

Your new 2016 will also have the hidden storage compartment in the trunk, unless you fill it with the subwoofer.
