Engine 3.8

I have been reading from some owners about an issue with the oil . 5-20 or 5-30 ? Is there an inherent problem with the engineering of the 3.8 in that it is warranted for 100,000 and then after that good luck !!!

Re: Engine 3.8

Unless you have an additional warranty, the standard factory powertrain warranty is 5year/60k. All manufactures have an end to their warranty, but that isn't necessarily when they expect them to explode.

I have an 08 3.8 with close to 90k. No oil issues. I get $19.99 specials from the dealer and have them change it.

Some people have complained about 3.8 oil burners and there are some but I believe it is a low percentage when you consider how many were build over all these years.

Re: Engine 3.8

Thanks, it would be interesting to hear from the complainers how they maintained the engine. I bet you will find a lot that do not change the oil and filter as required !!!!

The last 3.8s were 2011. If you shop carefully you can probably get a good indication of whether the engine is fine or not. The warranties are 5 year/60k power train so you can buy with some confidence I am sure.

Re: Engine 3.8

I just purchased an unlimited, 2011, with 22,000 on it. It runs like a new watch. No leaks or burning of oil yet. Of course I have only put on 3000, but it seems to be fine. For a stock, no modifications or chip tunes, it has sufficient power as is. Just went camping and was pulling some pretty good grades and it just zipped Around, up and down as if it were not pulling the fully loaded vehicle with all the usual unnecessary camping crap we always bring along !!!! So far I am very happy with it. It also handles very well on the winding roads.

Again thanks

Re: Engine 3.8

I have a 2008 Rubicon with a 3.8. Picked it up with 36K on it. A few days later the oil light came on for a second then went out. Thought it was because I almost stalled it (6-speed) but decided to swing by my mechanic less than a 1/4 mile away. Pulled the dipstick and it was dry! Put 5 quarts in (it takes 6 with a filter change)! Long story short read up on them and found wrong piston rings were put in the engines (at least earlier models). Switched from synthetic back to 5W-30 and was still burning a quart every 500 miles. Decided to try 10W-40 and now it uses less than a quart over 3000 miles. As far as I know Chrysler is refusing to replace the engines. I am keeping an eye on the forums to see if anything changes. For now I am happy with the results. I live in New England and I used to run 10W-40 in my cars as a kid without a problem (even in the winters). Just had a very cold winter up here and no problems. I also wheel the vehicle during the summer. When I run it hard I will change to oil around the 2000 mile mark anyways so I don't usually see the level drop. Hope this helps.

Re: Engine 3.8

Thank you for the info. Mine is a 2011. I hope they decided to recognize the ring mistake prior to the manufacture of my engine. I just finished running it hard this weekend and the 5 - 20 has held up to the 5 hour run at 92 degree weather with a lat of winding, up and down hills. I took it out of overdrive during the hills for approx. 100 miles. Mine had 22000 on it when I purchased it not long ago so my limited experience with the engine is hardly a true teat as of yet. I will see in the near future if any problems arise !!!!! Again thanks for the heads up !

You're welcome. Glad to see you're driving it the way it was meant to be driven. Enjoy it!

Re: Engine 3.8

I have an 08 X with S package (now called Sport S).

It came with 3.21 gears and I just turned it in to get 4.10s. I went from the stock 16" wheel with OE 31s to 18" with BFG Rugged Terrain LT tires so it is up to 32 and heavier.

It ran fine around town but it could not get out of its on way on the highway so the re-gear should help a lot.

The engine has been highly reliable and since I am the original owner I have a lifetime powertrain warranty so I am keeping it.

Re: Engine 3.8

Thank you all for all the mostly positive experience with the 3.8 . I did purchase an additional warranty on the power train . So far I will use the factory warranty if necessary. The only reason I purchased the additional warranty because there are no records on the service done in the first 22000 . I am always concerned that people do not maintain or beat the hell out of the thing prior to my purchase.
Thanks
1Alanwayne
