Factory warranty changes for 2016+

Saw this today and although I understand they are falling in line with other manufacturers, I'm still disappointed. Makes me wonder if they are bleeding form warranty work so much this is their easiest option, instead of better quality control.

Chrysler shortens powertrain warranty for 2016 models

May 28, 2015
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles apparently has lost confidence in its products. Despite touting “We’re so confident in the quality of our vehicles, that we’re backing them with a 5-Year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty,” the company has announced plans to cut the mileage coverage nearly in half.

Starting with the 2016 model year, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will reduce the length of its powertrain warranty from five years or 100,000 miles, to five years or 60,000 miles—whichever comes first. The reduced coverage impacts all gasoline-powered Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram trucks sold in the United States.

For Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram trucks, bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage will remain at three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Fiat vehicles will continue with a 4-year/ 50,000-mile warranty. Before Chrysler’s 2009 bankruptcy, the automaker offered a lifetime limited powertrain warranty.

Find out whether extended car warranties are an expensive gamble or worthwhile investment. And check our guide to car maintenance.

The move follows an industry trend toward shorter warranties. General Motors made a similar announcement in March, cutting its five-year powertrain warranties from 100,000 miles to 60,000 miles.

This move to 60,000 miles of coverage brings Chrysler in line with not only the GM family of vehicles but also other brands, including Ford, Honda, Mazda, Scion, Subaru, Toyota, and Volkswagen.

Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi remain the outliers, with a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty, but only for the first owner. Subsequent owners have coverage under a 5-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle warranty.

Maxcare lifetime warranty is starting to make a lot more sense each year that passes.

That's the first thing I thought of too. We bought one after debating on how long we would keep the Jeep - or whether we might trade it in. At this point we had decided we most likely keep it, so the warranty made sense.

I wonder if they will raise the price of Maxcare since more repairs will be billed to them?

I was going to wait for 2016 colors to be revealed and order a 2016 JKU...but perhaps the smarter play is to scoop up a 2015 JKU and have a longer/better warranty...though I wonder what % of people reach 100,000 in the 5 year span....

The industry norm used to be 3yrs/36,000 miles. So this is no big deal as far as I'm concerned. When the U.S. manufacturers were playing catchup with the imports years back they started throwing out 10yr/100,000 mile warranties to get the car buyers attention. There's no way I'd let this influence my decision on whether to by a 2015 or a 2016.

I know I wouldn't. Not even close. I would hit the 5 year limit, with what, only 24K miles.

I see you drive as much as I do. 6200 miles on a 1 yr old Cherokee with a drive to Florida and back. That trip was 2500 miles alone.

Re: Factory warranty changes for 2016+

I guess we enjoy our Jeep more (one more reason the warranty made sense). I'm at 44,000 miles this week, we bought it with 8 miles back in Oct 2012. Two and a half years, many different states driven in, and plenty of fun.

That's cool... you're really racking up the miles!

It's pretty much a non-issue if you lease.

Re: Factory warranty changes for 2016+

It would affect me, but then again combined on the vehicles we have (4 / 2 drivers) we put on about 70000 miles last year between commutes, trips, visiting relatives and sporting events. How much is Maxcare roughly?
