Help!! With Buying 08-13 JK Unlimited four door (NYC)

Hi Guys,

I currently own a 2008 Grand Cherokee V6 3.7L which is horrible on gas miles and isn't fun to drive. I usually get 13.4 mpg avg and I am hearing the Wrangler Unlimited gets about 16.5 average. Is this true?

Im only interested in the Wrangler Unlimited 4 door automatic, either Sahara or Sport S with navigation, power windows and a hard top. The Rubicon is out of my price range and I am only looking to be able to tow a Harley Davidson bike out of state from time to time.

So my debate is whether I should buy an older Sahara / Sport S with the older engine such as 2008- 2011 or buy a 2012 Sport S with the new 3.6L engine?

Basically, what I'm asking is which one is worth buying because I don't want to regret the purchase for saving a couple of bucks? I'm a better of with a Sahara 3.8L or a Sport S 3.6L?

Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking the same thing. I'm looking at 2012 or newer, because I believe the new 3.6L Pentastar is more fuel efficient, plus my wife will be driving it, so newer is better from a maintenance POV. I believe that the 3.8 is a good motor, but you will get gas mileage like the 3.7. The one we drove at the dealership yesterday was averaging 17.8 for test drives, and I figure test drives get bad mpg because it's all acceleration and stop signs. I just can't believe that the cheapest jeep was $33.5K A base model is a special order.

Re: Help!! With Buying 08-13 JK Unlimited four door (NYC)

I have a 2011 Unlimited Rubicon with the 3.8 minivan motor and can say you definitely want the Pentastar. In stock form the 3.8L does get decent gas mileage, but it's very anemic on power. Start adding a lift, bigger tires (37's in my case), armor, etc. and it only gets worse. You can regear to recoup some of the lost power and fuel efficiency, but you lose top end when you gear deeper.

The 3.6L had more power, a little better fuel economy, and a better power band. And you don't have to bear nearly as deep if you decide to throw bigger tires under it.

Now for the model. For what you'll pay for a Sahara, you can get into a Rubicon. Now if you're looking at New, then of course you're h going to pay more for leather, painted top which I despise, and painted flares which I also despise, but you should be able to find a gently used 2012 or even 2013 for Leeds than a new Sahara. The front D44 axle and lockers are definitely worth the coin. Even in stock form the Rubicon will impress you with what it'll do. Start adding to it and it gets better from there. If you're only looking for a street vehicle with light trail use, though, the front D30 will suffice. Just be sure to get the 3.73 gear ratio for towing.

Work out the numbers on gas vs purchase price. I saved ~8K on a used 11 over a new one...8k will buy me a hell of alot of gas. the power...sure, penstar is faster, but I have no issues with mine....its a jeep, want power, buy a race car

If gas mileage is important to you than get the pentastar 3.6 engine. I would stay away from the 2012s, because some have defective cyclinder heads and water pumps. Go with a 2013 sport with 3:21 ratio, providing that you are going to stay with the stock tires. If larger tires are in your plans for the future, then get the 3:73 differential ratio. They offer a Sport S, that comes with the 255 tires and 3:73 as standard.

Wow, the 2012 have bad heads. I was looking at buying a preowned sahara with the nav, leather, max tow package with 19k. Now should I wait for the 2014. Are they releasing anything new like the new 8speed transmission. Why aren't the 2014 listed on the jeep website. What are they hiding? Lol

Thanks guys for the input.

Doubt you'll see an 8-speed in a Wrangler.

It's only a small percentage that have the defective heads, but why take a chance. You can check the coding on the heads, the original ones that failed were AA heads, then the update which had fewer failures was the AB head and now the latest with no known failures is the AC head. Most of the 2013s have the AC head.
The 8 speed will not be offered in 2014, per the regional Manager for Chrysler. The 5 speed now being offered is a great heavy duty transmission!

Yes, I had the 4 speed in my 2003 Tj and now the 5 speed in my 2013 Rubicon. There is no comparison, the 5 speed is that much better. I suggest that you go and take a test drive on a new one and then decide for yourself!

If you're not too worried about speeding around then take your time and find a gently used 2011 rubicon. I actually scored one today for 31k. Has everything except leather and only has 10k miles. I went with the 2011 bc it has the updated interior and can be found way cheaper than the 2012's.

It's not so much about speed, but overall engine power and efficiency. The 3.8L minivan mill is a pig. Not much you can do to make it perform any better on the '11, either.

$31k for a 2011 w. 10k on the clock huh? Picked up my '11 Unlimited Rubicon with leather for $34k new. Guess that speaks volumes about resale value, huh?
