Key FOB Issues

I've found that this is relatively common, but haven't found a solid fix for the problem. Here's the skinny:

2011 Jeep Wrangler 'Oscar Mike' edition, 10,500 miles

1. Wife tried to open doors remotely with key FOB. No joy. Unlocked the door manually at the driver's door and the alarm went off. Jeep won't start. Pulled horn fuses to keep neighbors from coming to my door with torches and pitchforks!
2. Replaced battery in her key FOB. No joy.
3. Tried my key FOB. No Joy.
4. Removed and replaced all K relays. No joy.
5. Disconnected negative battery terminal and left overnight. No joy.

I know there has to be a way to remedy this, but I haven't found it (other than replacing the wireless control module!!).

Any advice or link to a thread in this forum would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Joel

Cannot help you, but amazing low miles on a 5 year old Jeep. Maybe it is sad from lack of use .

Re: Key FOB Issues

😉

It was purchased while I was in Germany when I thought I would be coming back to the US that year. Ended up staying another four years. So, it was driven once a week over that period of time and garaged the rest of the time until I came home. I love it, but this problem seems common with no fix I can find other than the WCM or TIPM replacement, both spendy repairs out of warranty!

Re: Key FOB Issues

After 5 years, I have to wonder if your battery is dead. Yea, I see you replaced the batteries in the remotes, but what about the main 12v battery under the hood?

If it is week, all sorts of strange things can happen, plus the not-so-strange symptom of simply not starting.

Re: Key FOB Issues

Gonna pull that and have it tested after I check the connection on the WCM. If the WCM is bad, then the replacement at the dealer is $361. God help me if it is the TIPM!

Re: Key FOB Issues

I'll add, we just went thru this with our Charger. It has the keyless start option. So, I know how frustrating this can be.

We got into the Charger, pressed the "start" button, and nothing. No messages. No sounds. Just dead.

Like you, we attempt to debug the problem. For example, we got the other, second, keyfob thinking that might be the problem. Didn't help.

It would have been so much nicer, more user friendly, if one of those color LCD displays on the dash gave us even a hint as to the problem. Something like:
Keyfob - Check
Foot on brake pedal - Check
Starting initiated - Check
Engine turning over - Fail
Call for Road Side assistance? Yes/No

Re: Key FOB Issues

Check the main battery, if it's low that is your problem....

Re: Key FOB Issues

My thought is that if the vehicle battery is low/dead cell/dead, the horn alarm wouldn't sound, emergency flashers wouldn't flash as part of the alarm, and no dash lights would come on? All these indications are active. Still gonna pull it as a process of elimination troubleshooting.

Re: Key FOB Issues

Look in your owners manual to see if there's a way to reprogram the remote. I believe you have to have the key in the run position and hold the fob in a certain location in your vehicle. If you can do I would try it first. Also maybe check to see if there are any nest's (rats etc.) maybe they chewed some wires off if it was sitting for a long time. Just my two cents.

I had a bad battery, where it had no problem powering everything, except to spin the starter.

Re: Key FOB Issues

When I was having intermittent issues with my Wrangler, the shop replaced the battery. I thought they were crazy. It's been a year and no more issues. Who would have thought!!??
