LED vs HID

In all of my personal vehicles I have run HID bulbs for about 5 years now. I like them and they are easy to install with the factory headlight assembly. I see LED headlights out there now. Anyone have info as to which is better? I currently run 20,000k bulbs in my truck and like the bright white with a tint of blue. Do LED's give the same effect? Thanks

Re: LED vs HID

HID throws out more lumens than LED.
The LED technology has made great strides, but IMO, they have a little ways to go yet.

I personally prefer the 5500-6000k light output of a quality Phillips Zenon bulb.

Re: LED vs HID

We sell both HID kits and LED headlight kits. The HID's are brighter, a 4300K HID kit is up to about 3200 lumens (about 3 times brighter than a standard halogen bulb) where the LED kits we sell are rated at 2500 lumens. (about twice the brightness of a halogen bulb) The LED's have fewer parts and a longer rated lifespan but if you want the maximum light output a XenonDepot HID kit is still the way to go.

Re: LED vs HID

I guess one of the big pluses of led is the low power needed and low heat generated by the lights

The HID's need ballasts, don't they? LED's do not? Just plug and play?

Some led are plug and play some are not make sure you get ones that support canbus. Many of the $20 cheapies on ebay won't work on newer model GCs. The philips xenon depot ones are plug and play, pricey though

BUT they are all plug n play meaning no ballasts to mount. Those $20 ebay cheapies are still plug an play with an additional anti flicker harness which does not require any mounting of huge ballast boxes

lol that depends on your definition of plug and play, mine is you take it of the box plug it into the H11 socket and it works. you can certainly buy and add various wire warts onto the cheap ones to make them work, if that's your definition of plug and play then ever one of them on ebay is plug and play.
there are other concerns with the cheap ones, the lumen output on them are terrible and produce very little usable light. of the better LEDs that do produce usable light you need to keep color in mind, most are 6000k and stock HID headlights are 4300k. In that case you end up with a fog light that is bluer then your HID headlights making the headlights look yellower, not the look I want, have tried it. you could always change the headlight HID bulbs to 5000 or 6000k depends on how much of a project and how much money you want to get into. you also have fans and fanless of the ebay fanless ones many do not properly dissipate the heat and light output decreases until they cool. I have tried a few cheap and expensive leds and that said I am back to the silverstar ultra halogens. I keep an eye out for the latest LEDs and in my opinion currently the best ones out there if you can deal with the cost and 6000k color is Philips X-treme Ultinon. wake me up when someone comes out with an H11 LED that is plug and play(my definition) 4300k(no stickers), fanless and with at least 2000 lumens output and that does not take a month to ship from china.

Re: LED vs HID

These ones were going to be a try as a possibility but of course the wait until thanksgiving to get them is not good and who knows how the returns would go if needed.
