Lifetime warranty worth the money?

With the drop in years and mileage of the factory warranty, I am thinking I might inquire about the lifetime warranty. Has anyone looked into these? Worth the money? Cost?

Re: Lifetime warranty worth the money?

I think it is bargain, especially if you keep car long time and/or drive tons of miles.

I bought it on a 2014 GC Overland, we keep cars long time. My 2004 JGC has over 200k miles and was handed down to son. the 2004 had very very few issues except for normal wear/tear.

At around $2,300 for the lifetime I don't know how you can miss. I think in todays Jeeps, the engine and drivetrain are really good but the amount of electronics had me worry over 10+ year period.

Shop around on internet, my dealer was very high and didn't budge so I found much less through brick and mortar on internet.

Re: Lifetime warranty worth the money?

I bought an extended warranty on my wifes Santa Fe that came in handy when it developed a oil leak that would have cost a 1000 bucks! Almost paid for itself so I will buy it on my new Jeep when it arrives. It pays to shop around as others have said.

Re: Lifetime warranty worth the money?

If you are capable of basic repairs then the Lifetime Added Care Plus covers major things and costs a bit less.

Since am getting older and tend to keep cars I like for decades it made sense for me.

OTOH if you tend to trade before the powertrain warrenty expires it would not unless transferrable.

And on the gripping hand, the only extended warrenty I would consider is the Chrysler one.

The gripping hand = awesome!

I am not that handy so I tend to pay more than most for repairs since I just don't have the inclination not the patience to take care of it myself.

Re: Lifetime warranty worth the money?

I was debating between 7 year and lifetime max care. I went with 7 year /100k because of the contract verbiage and definition of "covered". Essentially if something fails within that timeframe it is covered as nothing should fail and otherwise is considered a defect.

On the other hand, the verbiage for me in lifetime wasn't clear enough as it said something to the tune "repair will be covered IF it is a defect in craftsmanship". Honestly after 7 years it will be hard to argue that something failed due to defect vs wear and tear. Again "lifetime" doesn't mean your lifetime but the life of the item which is subjective and probably up to the dealer to determine.

Also lifetime max care is NOT transferable in my state (New York) but 7 year one is.

Appreciate the in depth analysis. Was this the dealer (Mopar) extended you reviewed? Several folks on here have said to shop around... on line... that seems more risky to me to be honest. At least at the dealer they have a direct line and regular communication with the warranty company, right? Will be interesting to see what the dealer options look like.

Re: Lifetime warranty worth the money?

The more technology you have on the vehicle, the more valuable the extended service contract becomes. The length of the contract should probably be based on how long you plan to keep the vehicle.

This is for Chrysler Max Care service contract. Anything else (3rd party) IMHO is not worth a dime.

The best place to buy those is online like here (where I purchased mine):

http://www.chryslerfactoryplans.com

Once you purchase it shows up on mopar owner connect and dealers can see it. It is legit. It is just a dealer selling those online at a discount. Doesn't really matter from which dealer you are buying and how (over phone, online or in person) they are just selling a Chrysler product - extended warranty. Just make sure that this is Chrysler Max care product and you are good.

I hadn't read the full Lifetime Maximum Care contract yet; and you're right about the language. In addition to the "mechanical failures caused by a defect in materials or workmanship" that you mentioned, on page 5 of a sample contract online, it states:

Quote:
The Plan will not cover, or apply to loss or expense resulting from:
* Repairs required as a result of other than a manufacturing defect (such as a design defect or normal wear).
Previously, I was under the impression that the Mopar Maximum Care service contract applied to ALL repairs, even normal wear.

Glad you pointed it out.

As for the "lifetime" of any given component, I suppose that would be Chrysler's call, not the dealer's. I think the dealer has to get all of these warranty repairs approved by HQ.

Its just the Powetrain warranty that's dropping. The full, bumper-to-bumper, warranty isn't changing.

From my own experiences, it pretty rare that any of the few things that are actually covered by the Powertain warranty break. Well, and not have your warranty claim rejected because they feel you had a "whoops" while off-roading.

Plus, its difficult to get 60,000 miles, let alone 100,000 miles, on your Wrangler driving in 4WD-Lo on the trails over the course of 5 years.

Re: Lifetime warranty worth the money?

I've bought the maximum extended warranties on all my 7 Jeeps.

Don't listen to the naysayers. They have no idea what they're talking about. In 15 years of dealing with Mopar's service contracts all I can say is they never gave me any trouble whatsoever regarding a repair.

Don't forget you also get enhanced roadside assistance, a rental car every time you bring it in for repair, and trip interruption coverage. I had a header bolt break while in Canada on vacation and they picked up the Jeep, gave me a nice loaner, and gave me a per diem "trip interruption" of I think $125/day for the three days it was in.

My 2002 GC had $12k in repairs over 7 years and 100,000 miles(lots of little leaks repaired and things like the heated seats...items I would not have paid out of pocket to repair). They never tried to say anything was "worn out" and therefore not covered.

The wheel and tire coverage has served me well, with a no hassle, no prorated replacement of the wheel, tire, and sensor, right at the dealership.

The only caveat I've discovered is that Lifetime coverage is generally not transferable...and I'm not hanging on to Jeeps as long as I once did. So, even though the 7/120 coverage is about the same price as lifetime, if you think you'll sell it before the 8 year mark, a fully intact, essentially bumper to bumper warranty is very valuable for a resale...
