Never had a Jeep before..Wrangler Unlimted Sahara Questions..

First let me say I have pretty much despised jeeps my whole life, that is the Wrangler type style vehicle. I never even gave them a second look and they just became part of the scenery when seeing one on the road.

Anyway I was at the dealership a couple weeks ago and it's like something clicked as I drove by one one in the lot lol. I saw this 4 door door sport in red with huge tires. The thing was a beast and looked great. Still can't stand the little two door Jeeps but these 4 door ones look like a luxury SUV like a Land Rover? is it just me? They really have a look that no other vehicle has and sticks out greatly which I like a lot.

Here come the problems...I am a huge tech guy and love to have all the latest stuff. These wranglers seem to be lacking in all catergories regarding this and I have a few other concerns.

- The wranglers radio options seem really dumbed down which leads me to believe the seemingly one touchscreen they offer doesn't have the integration with the PCM like other vehicles these days. Can the 2017 wranglers radios be swapped out with any after market radio? This would be huge if possible. Anything else I was looking at for vehicles like the grand Cherokee or Durango, you cannot swap the radios out if you wanted to. Not that I would on those, but I would buy an older model and install a CarPlay radio if able.

- Is 4 wheel drive really always engaged? I usually do 75-85 on the highway to work everyday which is only about 10 miles. But I have heard Jeeps a really bad on the highway. Could I slow it down on a windy day? Of course I could...I would have regular all season tires on mine if I bought one.

- How is the maintenance on these? Any concerns?

- I won't be doing any off road stuff really. I just really like the look of them when optioned right.

The 5 auto trans I am kind of disappointed on as I have been looking forward to the new 8 speed for the last few years on other FCA autos. My current 2006 Durango has a 5 speed though so it would be going backwards at least.

- Gauge cluster is really disappointing. Looks more dated than my 06 Durango.

In the end I I know I will get some flack for even considering this since I won't be off roading. But who knows maybe it will get me into it a bit? We do get snow up here 3-4 months a year in NH so i love being able to plow through anything with my Durango, be even better with the Jeep.

Any input appreciated!

It looks like your best option would be to wait a few months and get the all new 2018 JL in Sahara trim, with every option.

You would get the new 4th gen 8.4 Uconnect with Carplay, and the 'new for Wrangler' 8 spd transmission.

Oh wow, looked up the 2018 models briefly but didn't see that info.

Any ideas when they would hit the dealer lots?

All Wranglers (JK's) have Part Time 4WD. That means, that you have to manually shift it from 2WD mode to 4WD mode, and back again. Also, since it is merely part time (Command Trac transfer case) and not full time (SelecTrac transfer case), you can only shift it into 4WD on low-traction surfaces. That means mainly loose dirt roads and snow/ice covered streets. Find that your snow covered street changes to a plowed street, and you have to quickly shift back to 2WD.

Re: Never had a Jeep before..Wrangler Unlimted Sahara Questions..

Current generations of Wranglers can have aftermarket radios installed and there are interfaces available to retain things like steering wheel controls. What happens with the new JL, no one knows.

I currently have a 12 JK and have a Pioneer AVH4100NEX installed and have steering wheel controls and little things like dimming following the dimmer control (which is controlled by the CANBUS)
