OEM Half Door Care

Hi all! I'm sorry if this is a subject that has been covered before; I have a few questions to those who own half doors. I'm about 99% sure I'll be ordering my new Wrangler Unlimited with half doors from the factory, but they are a somewhat rare (obviously) feature on Wranglers down here in Florida. Although I've seen a few in the wild, I have only had two chances to see them up close and personal at my job.

Neither were great examples. The first set were new but the uppers were removed and stored, and the second set were in a real sorry state. Scratched windows, destroyed weather stripping, sun damage, etc. Mind you, that customers' Wrangler was a 2010 and a complete mess, but still, it didn't look too promising.

My question is mostly pertaining to how well they hold up over the years. I plan to keep my Jeep for as long as I possibly can and if there is anything I can do to improve the lifespan of the doors, especially the uppers, I would love to know what can be done. I know the plastic scratches easily and I plan on buying the MOPAR half door storage bag before the jeep arrives, but any chemical treatment, cleaning and/or general care tips would be greatly appreciated!

Bestop makes a line of soft top cleaners and conditioners that are excellent. Stay away from "glass" cleaners as they will cause your windows to yellow. If you don't want to go with the specialty cleaners, just use mild soap and water. Never use paper towels to dry your windows. Get a pack of micro-fiber towels at home depot. They work on everything and won't scratch. Remember to clean any grime or grit off of your windows by spraying with a hose before wiping, wiping them dry will scratch them.
I believe you can also find half door tops with sliding windows which would eliminate the scratch problem.
Probably not a problem in Florida, but never fold or roll your windows when it's cold or even chilly outside, the cooler it is, the more brittle they become.
The worst thing in Florida for soft tops is probably the sun, there may be conditioners that provide UV protection. (Also check out a product called 303 Aero space Protectant, it's great for keeping your plastics and dashboard from cracking/ fading due to UV, find it at most boating/RV stores)

But keep in mind that no soft top or window uppers will last forever. 4 or 5 years is probably a safe estimate in optimum conditions.

Personally I like hard doors, they have real glass windows that won't scratch, but you can still remove them when it's nice out! (You may have to relocate your mirrors though)

Re: OEM Half Door Care

Thank you, that is JUST the information I needed! I've been back and forth on half and full doors for a while, but I'll honestly be having them off for about 90% of the time. It just rains so often here that the convenience of just slapping the uppers back on makes it worth it, even if it isn't quite the open door experience. Just a compromise of sorts, I guess.
Besides, i think they look awesome

Re: OEM Half Door Care

FYI: no one makes uppers with sliders for the JK.

Also, recommend you get some clear 3M protective tape. Especially on the rears, the uppers tend to rub the paint when opening and closing the doors.

A few years ago Rampage was going to make them, I guess they never did.

Full doors are nicer anyway, imo

These are for a JK but likely not for newer ones

Re: OEM Half Door Care

I'll look into those , but the pictured product is for a TJ. The body of a JK half door hasn't changed, so an upper that fits an 07 will fit a 15. There was a slight change made to the way the interior panel fits on the lower at some point during JK production, but I forget when...and it won't affect upper fitment

For $800, one could probably have a set custom fabricated.

Re: OEM Half Door Care

I looked through the Rampage website and they claimed to have no uppers for a JK. I'm guessing that it's a product that never made it past prototyping...

Re: OEM Half Door Care

Well, I was hoping they were offered. There was a company called Zebra something that prototyped and produced half doors while promising sliders for uppers...but it's been about 2-3 years since the "proposed sale date" and nothing is available, last I heard.

Sliders are great for the cold weather months when the plastic window get more brittle...especially if you have to park outside during snow/ice storms.
