Oil Pressure is Whacky!

Alright, I'm curious if my gauge is messed up. When I turn the key to the on position, it show right above the 40 line but when I start it it goes above 80 which shows almost pegged out. My temp gauge is ready between 190 and 200 so its not getting hot. I just changed the oil and filter last weekend. any suggestions?

I'm not familiar with the Wrangler gauge, but I've never seen one that registers pressure when the engine is not running. The old mechanical gauges would register pressure for a short period after turning the engine off, but that was because the pressure doesn't drop to zero immediately.

Pegging when starting a cold engine isn't unusual, but it should start dropping as the engine oil warms up, usually moving to the 30-40 level while driving, possibly dropping to as low as 15 when idling.

Re: Oil Pressure is Whacky!

Is of a vintage where the sensors were notorious for flakiness. They are cheap and simple to replace.

The 3.6 has a two stage oil pump above 1800-2000 rpm under throttle pressure jumps from 40ish to 80-90

Re: Oil Pressure is Whacky!

Oil pressure sending unit needs to be replaced, common issue.

What do you own? What's this happening on?

What oil?
What filter?
