Ordering and trade in process

How does the ordering process work with a trade in? Would anyone who has done this like to shed a little light on their experience?
If you place an order which could take 6-8 weeks to process, when is the value of your trade vehicle discussed/agreed upon?

They will value your trade in when the car you ordered comes in. This is what stopped me from getting my Jeep last year. I didn't want to order a Jeep and then have my trade in low balled after waiting so long for delivery. I'm in a similar situation this year so I think I'll just pick up a 2014 off the lot instead of ordering a 2015.

I ordered a new Jeep last fall with a trade in and i did receive the full amount of the trade in. I did take steps to minimize additional mileage. It depends on the dealer.

Re: Ordering and trade in process

Usually when a dealer appraises a vehicle for trade-in purposes on a new vehicle order they'll estimate the value based on the anticipated mileage your trade-in will have at the time your new vehicle is delivered.

Unless you put on considerably more mileage than they estimate, damage the vehicle or have mechanical issues in the time it takes to build and deliver your new vehicle there really should be no reason for them to reappraise the original trade-in value they quoted to you.

Yeah. It all depends on the dealership. I tried to order from one dealership and they said they wouldn't do the trade-in appraisal until my new jeep was delivered. Another local dealership gives the trade-in value when placing the order and honors it upon delivery unless something unexpected has happened

Re: Ordering and trade in process

When I went into the dealership in Jan 2014, the first thing I did was negotiate the price of my trade in before we even talked about ordering my 2014 JKURX. I got the price I was looking for the trade in. Than I negotiated the price for the JKURX.

Ordering and trade in process

I give 2 values. What it is worth now and what we guess it will be worth 6-8 weeks later with 1000-2000 more miles. This way the customer can compare my value to the research they have done themselves on the current value.
Most states allow a pre trade meaning you give your vehicle to the dealership now and still get the value plus any tax savings against your new Jeep when it arrives. The state of IL allows 9 months to receive a tax credit on the trade value.

Re: Ordering and trade in process

What about dealer incentives or Jeep incentives. When does that negotiation take place. For example what if the dealer is offering a $1000 off any new car in June would that apply to your order if it doesn't come in for several weeks. On the other hand, what if you order now and the month that it comes in the dealer is offering $1000 off.

Re: Ordering and trade in process

Chrysler offers incentive protection on some of the incentives. If the incentive goes down or up you have your choice when you take delivery.

Dealer incentives are up to the dealer. Factory incentives typically allow you to take the higher of what is available at the time of delivery vs. what was available when you placed your order.

A reputable dealer also won't massively devalue your trade between the time you place your order and when the vehicle arrives.
