Question about new JK lifetime powertrain warranty

Hi guys, I ordered a brand new '17 Jeep JK a week ago and I'm waiting for it to be built. To make a long story short, this Wrangler had a window sticker of approx. $41k. I haggled back and forth with my dealer to obtain essentially employee pricing which came in at $36,4xx. Once I put my $500 deposit down, the salesman/owner (small town dealer) said "You know, in order to get you that price I had to trim the warranty out of the price". He was rushed to close down for the night and I didn't think much of it until a few days later.

Regardless I should still have my 3/36k bumper to bumper and then my 5/60k powertrain. Don't all new Wranglers come with a free lifetime powertrain warranty provided I get it inspected every 5 years at the dealership? Did the dealership pull a fast one on me? I just want to know if I should approach him and ask him what he meant about the warranty comment or by default do I get it anyways?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Question about new JK lifetime powertrain warranty

There is no lifetime powertrain warranty anymore ... I think.

Unless he usually throws in like a service contract for free after regular warranty expires. You can get one yourself here:

Your warranty should be:

Is it something where the local dealer offers a package with each vehicle, and because of the deal he made with you, he isn't offering it?

What is the name of the dealership?

Some dealerships offer something similar to:

I don't know if they still do it, but a group of "southern" dealers would offer a perk of an additional/longer warranty with the purchase of a new vehicle from one of them. I guess if the dealer is offering it, it could be withheld/forfeited too, as part of any purchase negotiation.

IMHO, if that's the case here, it isn't a "fast one".

Re: Question about new JK lifetime powertrain warranty

There are several dealers in our area who offer "free" extended Powertrain "warranties" (they are, of course, technically service contracts, not truly extensions of your factory warranty), some even on their pre-owned inventory as well. The dealer I bought from offers a 10-year/Unlimited Mileage Powertrain warranty on (nearly) all their vehicles.

I contacted the Finance person who is in charge of setting up this "free" perk to get more specifics about the warranty, particularly who backs the contracts and what the requirements are to satisfy coverage. She gave me the name of the company (not Mopar, of course); and when I researched said company, the online feedback from customers who had bought service contracts from them was consistently 1 star poor-level satisfaction.

I told the Finance Advisor at the dealership about the results of my inquiry into the company they use for their (heavily advertised) warranty, and asked if they would give me credit toward a Mopar plan or reduce my purchase price by the extended warranty value (I had decided I didn't want to deal with their warranty company at all - that I would look into getting a factory-backed Mopar Vehicle Protection Plan). They refused to give me any sort of discount for declining the warranty. I suspect the dealership pays very little per vehicle for these bulk service contract offerings...and you get what you pay for.

These extended warranties around here aren't mystery or surprise bonuses unveiled during the negotiation process - these warranties are a cornerstone of marketing for the dealerships who offer them. They feature in their TV spots, and are present on every page of their websites. It seems strange that the OP's dealer includes one of these 3rd-party service contracts and doesn't mention it straightaway as a selling point?

Re: Question about new JK lifetime powertrain warranty

Hi guys, thanks for all your input. My dealer (which I would prefer to leave the name out of it), is a very small dealership located in Minnesota. They are the only car dealership in my wife's small hometown that doesn't even have a traffic light.

It's funny you mention the dealerships using this as advertising to sway you in. I looked at their website this morning before responding to this post and I see that they no longer advertise the lifetime powertrain warranty. If it is in fact a 3rd party deal, I'm not interested. It sounds like I should be happy that I got the deal I got.

The window sticker was $40,295 and I negotiated it down to $36,467. Did I do good? That's with no add-on's, extra warranty or accessories.

I tried my best to support a small town dealership and come up with a deal that was fair to both of us.
