Radiator failure

Well boys and girls...check your radiators. Mine decided to spring a leak at about 26,000 miles. Specifically in the lower driver's side corner, right where the PLASTIC side tank mates to the aluminum core. Very disappointing for how few miles it has.

Anyhow, I just got finished installing a new ALL aluminum radiator this evening. I ran out of daylight and patience, so I'll test everything out in the morning. Overall, not a bad job. Just some difficult-to-get-to 8mm bolts. Air filter housing and tube needs to come out, as does the grille and the top plastic radiator cover, and the reservior, and the fan. I used Summit Racing's part number 380466. The only issue I found was that there was a bolt hole missing on the new radiator for the mounting point for the trans cooler. It's an easy fix though...I cut a 1x3 piece of flat stock aluminum and drilled it to use the hole for the AC condenser. Otherwise, fitment was not a problem at all. Will know more tomorrow after I fill it up and run it.

Re: Radiator failure

Replaced mine recently. Tried some sealant to clog the hole, no Bueno. Ended up replacing the radiator after top blow off the old one, lol

Re: Radiator failure

Why they make these things out of plastic is beyond me. Buttoned it up this morning and tested everything. No leaks...very happy with the build quality of the new one.

Curious, is this not covered by warranty?

If memory services me well, didn't GM try this radiator design back in the 80's, and quickly found out that it wouldn't last. Basically, the significant difference in coefficient of expansion between the plastic and the metal, caused a highly stressed joint, and the joint inevitably failed.

BTW, are you sure you didn't cause this, accidentally, while you were removing and re-installing parts under the hood to be hydrographicalized?

It serves you fine...I had a Caddy back then with that same design of radiator that also failed right where the plastic met the aluminum.

HAHAHAH...hey, had I removed the radiator and had that dipped, perhaps it would have held up better. If only they made a carbon fiber radiator....

Not sure actually. I briefly thought about that when I noticed the leak, but why am I going to go to the dealer, be without my vehicle for at least 2-3 days while they shove another piece of crap part under the hood? No thanks. I want this to be once and done. Warranties aren't the solution to everything.
