Rubicon X Unlimited Road Worthy Tire Replacement Suggestions

What would be the best tires for a Rubicon X Unlimited that offers a little more road worthy comfortability vs the knobby off road BF Goodrich it comes packaged with? Michelin perhaps or any recommendations with model/brand would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rubicon X Unlimited Road Worthy Tire Replacement Suggestions

I love my Firestone Destination A/T. Granted, they're on a TJ, but they're very streetable (I commute 38 miles each way), are great in sand and in standing water on the road (I'm in FL, so we see some real downpours). So far, about 10k in, wear seems to be very good - but it's early.

Firestones tend to be a very good value for your dollar. Ford's PR department really crushed them in the early 00s, and it seems they've never recovered from a reputation standpoint. But their tires are good quality as they always were. YMMV.

Re: Rubicon X Unlimited Road Worthy Tire Replacement Suggestions

For me. 17 is the best size. Im actually looking for some 17" wheels to replace the 18's on my diesel grand cherokee.

Obviously my opinion but it just allows for more cushion but still have a strong sidewall. 18's and up should b for bidden on any jeep unless its a dropped srt grand cherokee

I couldn't agree more I test drove a diesel Overland under consideration as well. Fast and amazing torque. Except when idling during the test drive the dealer said the strong engine burning smell we were breathing in suddenly was due to cozmolene which protects the underbody from rust. We weren't totally buying this and read in forums that it's an issue perhaps with the def fluid or new engine burning in that Jeep is supposedly aware of and working on. Have you heard about this and any opinions on what we experienced would be greatly appreciated. It's swaying us towards a Wrangler purchase instead. Thanks!

I got a full set of Sport S take-offs (tires+wheels+TPMS) rather inexpensively, to use as my summer/highway tires.

When I need to do some off-roading or bad-weather driving, I just swap back to my factory set.

smart move to save $$ on street tires.

I bought a set of JK Sahara wheels/tires from a guy for $400 ... brand new (he lifted his jeep and went to 35s). The Sahara OE tires are good on the highway. I replaced those recently with BF Goodrich Rugged Terrains... great compromise tire between on / off road.

I have the rigged terrains on my pickup. When the stock good years on the jeep are toast I'll probably put rugged terrains on it.

Re: Rubicon X Unlimited Road Worthy Tire Replacement Suggestions

The burning smell could have been the dpf/scr going through a regen cycle or burn. Be careful by the way, during a burn your exhaust temp can reach close to 1500 degrees F. Don't perform regen over grass if you like the way the grass looks. Regen should happen during the course of daily driving, but if you're commute doesn't include a good 20 minute stint of constant peddle pressure or slightly shorter at highway speeds you may have to make special trips to allow regen. Not sure if the Grand applications give users the option to perform stationary regens. This regen is important to your vehicle's feng shui should you choose to buy the diesel.
