RWD only JK

Just bought a used JK with very low miles and excellent condition and the price was too good to be true, but that's only because it's RWD only... I love my Jeep, don't have any regrets but my question to you guys is what kind of off roading if any can be done? And how expensive would it be to get a 4x4 conversion? Thanks

2010 JK Sport.

Re: RWD only JK

Did not know they made the jk in 2wd.

Probably be better to trade it off

You could do some light -moderate. I have seen guys lose real drive shafts and wheel fwd the rest of the day. Granted, they had to be winched some.

I have only seen one thread of a person that paid for a conversion and it seemed like a pita.

Re: RWD only JK

2wd is why it was a really good price. They made 2wds for a couple of years when JKs first came out but that's it.

You can lift them and they look cool but you cannot do off roading in it... maybe some dry trails but you won't climb anything and you'll get stuck in mud a lot.

If you want a 4WD sell it and start again. Converting it would be a big project and way more expensive undertaking.

If all you do is mall - crawl then it is fine if you live in the south. If you have a trailer or small boat then convert the rear - diff to limited slip or something like that to aid in towing.

Then you sort of regret it.........correct? For me, I'd trade it. If it's not 4wd, it's not a Jeep (IMO).

I'll agree to disagree. At the moment a 2WD is all I can afford... to me a Jeep that's not a Wrangler is not a Jeep.

Re: RWD only JK

A 4wd conversion would involve a new drive shaft, axel, and transmission. (Maybe a few more parts?) If you go around to scrap yards you could probably find your parts but you're better off trading it off. Best of luck.

Re: RWD only JK

ignoring some of the poop people are saying.

HAVE FUN WITH YOUR JEEP!

Take the doors and roof off in the summer, it will be so much fun.

Take it offroad and try to find its limit, if you need more traction consider installing a locking differential in the rear. It should help out a little bit. You'll still be able to do some off roading and a lot of trail riding in your Jeep.

And also if you are interested in swapping
http://www.jkowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9488

I don't expect it to be that tedious, you'll need a new front driveline and a new transfer case + driveshaft. This can be a good opportunity to put in a much stronger front axle.

Re: RWD only JK

Yeah, this last guy got it right. The parts can be had, and you have a chance to build your Jeep stronger than a stock Rubicon, or scrounge for take-off/junk yard parts.

An Atlas transfer case and a built front axle would kick off your build and let you optimize the Jeep more than if you ordered new (where you only have a couple different options).
