Small pipe going to Cat converter

I have small pipe going to my cat not sure what this is. This is for people with 80s or 90s cars.

Re: Small pipe going to Cat converter

Does the small pipe go to an air pump, which would be driven by the "fan belt"?

It goes all the way up this small box on top of the engine. It's a 318 v8

Re: Small pipe going to Cat converter

in my recollection those are either air injection or a test port. I think the only vehicle I ever owned that had that was my 80s-ish Datsun pickup (with the funky distributor that dealt with the two-plugs-per-cylinder.. I'm pretty sure that engine was on the edge for emissions certification)

Re: Small pipe going to Cat converter

The pipe goes to this small thing and has a 3 or 4 small hoses and wires. I think it has something to do with a emissions. The weld broke off the cat and I've plugged the hole. I don't know if this can be deleted.

Re: Small pipe going to Cat converter

It looks like it should be connected to a "smog" or air pump as posted earlier. It used to pump air into converter to help with emissions.

So does it matter if it's attached to cat? Can I just leave it off without any problems?
