Nominate Steering Column

Does the 2015 Wrangler have a locking steering column? I have not been able to lock mine. However one dealer advised me that it does have a lock and that I need to turn the ignition key to accessories position when I tow this vehicle behind my Motorhome. Another dealer said it did not have a lock. I'm looking for some clarification on this.
Thanks.

Re: Steering Column

Although I've never tried, I'm sure the column locks, it might take a half turn of the steering wheel to get it to engage, but since the ignition switch has been mounted on the steering column from 1968 to present, it was done to accomadate a steering lock. So I gotta guess it locks, your not gonna make me go down to the garage and try to overpower the power steering pump with the engine off and try to hit the lock are you?? hahahaha

Thumbs up Re: Steering Column

Thank you for your reply regarding the steering column. I have tried to turn the wheel with the engine off and came to the same conclusion about over powering the steering wheel.
I was confused because in the 2014 owners manual they give instruction regarding the key being in accessories position but in 2015 owner's manual they only discuss the transfer case with no mention of the steering column. I'll just play it safe for now and tow with the key turned to accessories.
Thank again for your reply.

Re: Steering Column

It may or may not have a lock. Page 16 of the 2014 Owner's Manual states that the Jeep may not be equipped with one but doesn't say which ones are. I read in another thread (possibly on another forum) that Jeep had dropped the lock in the US and that you then did not need to disconnect battery and put key in ACC to flat tow.

OM says if equipped that a 1/2 turn in either direction with key not in ignition will engage the lock. Haven't tried on mine yet to see if I have or not...

I can't believe that any new US vehicle doesn't have a locking steering wheel.

Re: Steering Column

Well after reading the responses from other members, I had to check for myself, and sure enough after one full turn(plus a little) in each direction, it appears there is no steering lock! What the hell Chrysler !! So then I sat in my wifes 2014 Cherokee Lattitude and got the same result....No lock there either!! I thought that was a federal standard. Guess not.....

Re: Steering Column

I forgot to mention my Wrangler is a 2014 Willys edition, maybe the higher trim levels are different, the Willys is based on the Sport trim. But after getting the same result on my wifes 2014 Cherokee, maybe they are just a thing of the past......I'm quite suprised!

Trim isn't a factor, mines a Rubicon.....

Re: Steering Column

Just got confirmation from an impeccable factory source (ArcherAce). After trying all the JKs he could get to, both auto & manual, only export (read non-US) have locking columns. He does not know when this change was made.

Re: Steering Column

A locking steering column isn't a federal standard. Some sort of theft prevention was required by FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) however. Everybody went with the locking columns.

Now that Sentry Key and the like exist these days, a locking column is no longer necessary.

And ArcherAce, eh? Yup, I'd say that's one dang good source for info.

Ditto. First car I have had in 30+ years that doesn't have a locking steering column. I remember when the ignition switch was moved to the steering column, to support locking it.

Though, the ignition switch on my JK is still on the steering column. Now, I have to wonder why?

I have to check my kid's Hemi Charger. He has the push button start, and the keyless fobs. Possibly, the switch to those, is the driving force behind loosing the steering column lock?
