In Jeep's 2015 Wrangler brochure in German, Billet, Copper Brown, and (yes) Sunset Orange are listed under Metallic.

Like I said, maybe there were different color runs at the factory. There shouldn't be this much disagreement about whether SO is pearl or not - it either is or it isn't, and you shouldn't have to look hard to detect it. It should be as obvious as Copper Brown or Billet (or the pictures in Jeep's ads). And on my jeep it just is not there.

Re: Sunset Orange

I've seen two in person. The first was flat as a pancake, there was no metallic in the paint, but it was pearl'd. The second had some metallic flake, but not enough for me to be happy with. Went Hydro Blue instead.

Re: Sunset Orange

Now that is interesting. They ARE different!
Color is important - I think I will have to paint wrap my jeep. Just not proud to be driving a rolling traffic cone.

Re: Sunset Orange

If 2015's SO does come in two versions, what happens if one needs to get body work done? Will it be a crapshoot if the body shop gets the correct one?

Hard to say, but I have a feeling it will be a very hard color to paint match correctly.

Beginning to think the same.. and sadly this color was at the top of my list... may have to rethink.

On moving to this area - my advice is move to north Idaho and plan on a commute to Spokane (which isn't very far). That's what most people do here. The jobs (and the excessive and onerous laws, regulations, taxes, etc) are in Washington, while the life you want to live is just across the border in Idaho. I would seriously check into that approach before you move. I know several folks who moved back across the border into Idaho just to get away from the Washington state government.
I should have read your post earlier . . .

I just put in an offer on a new home in Spokane Valley and it has been accepted. I think I'll be happy if for no other reason than King County (Seattle and Eastside) is 10X as screwed up as the rest of the state. I'll give Spokane a year or two and can always move then. On Wednesday I looked at a bunch of new construction in the Coeur d'Alene, Hayden and Rathdrum areas. The area was exactly what I am after but the new homes were either too much money or not quite enough for what I was after. I am getting better at accepting that some things in life are just not meant to be.

Maybe we can hook up for a jeep trip this summer? I had hoped to buy one with my cousin in Colorado and hit jeep trails not the way home. For family reasons he can't be gone long enough to make it work. So I may just buy one in Wyoming and drive back through the Tetons and such.

Re: Sunset Orange

Finally got a Sunset Orange (Hemi Orange).
Price keeps going up every 2 month so I found one on the lot with an earlier price.
Color is EXACTLY what I wanted.
Getting Rubicon Rock Rails, gas cap door, tire cover and taillight brush guards.
1st Wrangler but I own a 2002 Liberty that I also bought brand new.
Wrangler will be in the family forever!

Re: Sunset Orange

Back to the original topic about no pearl in the SO "Pearlcoat" - as an experiment I got a can of 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sunset Orange Pearlcoat (PLC) touchup paint from PaintScratch.com. Local auto parts don't have it in their catalogs yet, but PaintScratch can make any OEM paint formula, so I went with them. My SO jeep has NO pearl in it - but the touch up paint clearly has pearl in it! Glistens in the sunlight, as it should. I took an old saucepan lid, polished it up with 2000 wet/dry, and sprayed three light coats of the touchup paint followed by a light coat of clear enamel. You can see the difference! Pretty close in the shade, but in the sunlight they are like two different colors. This is the color I expected it to be based on the ads. It will be a nightmare to match damage.

Re: Sunset Orange

Wow ... with almost 30 years in the collision and refinishing industry I am cringing at the last few posts. Sorry but I need to read the entire thread when I get home.
While akajam when through some work to try to give a reasonable comparison, he is just adding more confusion to this thread.
Point number 1 and the most important thing to remember is even with all the latest tools and equipment and spray booths and paint technology. There is no way possible to duplicate the way the factory paints a modern car. The technology, the application, the product, the process, and the drying are all different.
As far as that spray can goes, was the guy mixing it getting the mix 100% spot on, in a small mix like that .2 of a gram will give you the different shade. That is just 1 example of a human error, there are many MANY more things than can and will effect color.
There is not enough forum storage space for me to write out everything, but lets just say that I will try later to write up something after reading the complete thread and try to shed some light on this very misunderstood industry.

Thanks - I look forward to it! And I'll probably have more questions for you when you're done.
