First off let me apologize to you Julia for thinking you as a male. Stupid assumption on my part.
Looking closer at your pictures after reading the complete thread I think I understand what you and others are referring to. It has been said earlier that the color is a pearl coat and not a metallic. I will visit a couple of local dealers today and see if I can spot this color in person. As a general rule cameras will not pick up mica or pearl when it is in a 2 stage paint system. But in one of your pictures I can see the pearl very slightly.
I have more to post but I want to look at the actual paint if I can to 100% accurate.

Re: Sunset Orange

So I have been trying to find the time to make a good reply to this without it sounding like a college lecture. ....
First off the paint code listed on the identification tag and the year make and model is the only true way to get the correct code for the vehicle. I should say that this method is used in all body shops and aftermarket parts stores to mix paint for repair or touch up. As far as the buyer ordering a color from a book with the salesman, well they just don't get that detailed. Names over the years are used over and over and so are paint codes. That is why you need the paint code and year make and model to be accurate. Let us look at Hemi Orange in the 70's code V2 (which IMO is Sunset Orange right down to almost the exact formula), it was called 2 different names by Chrysler in the same year. Hemi Orange and Tor Red and it was also called a Poly (metallic) by some paint manufacturers. It was never meant to be a metallic as it was but it came down the line after a red metallic and poof we have a Hemi Orange Poly. It was so slight that many aftermarket paint companies missed it and only PPG and Dupont had the correct formula.
2007 they had Hemi Orange or Tor Red with a code of PR3. Not sure the years of that run but I owned a Charger R/T and it was a extra cost option. It was not Hemi Orange of the 70's as it was only 2 shades more orange than the PR4 flame red that has been around forever and ever and was the trademark advertising color for a long time.
Now comes Sunset Orange and I believe they have tried to bring back Hemi Orange as the formula is the same except for the removal of the metallic and the addition of red pearl. PCL code for 2015 Sunset Orange does have a very slight pearl flake in it in the direct sunlight but it is very fine and hard to see. This red pearl accounts for the "pink" tint you would get on perhaps a cloudy day but really would see it under the street lamps or the parking lot lights.

So I am going to leave it here and I expect questions as there is a lot of information that I left out for the sake of putting you all to sleep.

Just a note ... my experience includes not only 25+ years of collision repair but also working for PPG and Sikkens/Akzo Nobel as a sales and technical consultant and also 5 years as a instructor for WyoTech in Laramie Wyoming, teaching Collision, Refinishing, Street Rod, and Chassis Fab. I am a certified ICar instructor and test administrator.
I am more than happy to share my knowledge on things I know and have experienced.

After examining one at my dealer I'd have to agree with this assessment. It's very difficult to see unless the lighting conditions are perfect but it's definitely there.

Re: Sunset Orange

I thank you for your expertise and the time you've taken. I can't see the pearl in mine, but haven't looked at it under streetlights. Then again, I shouldn't have to look that hard to see it In bright sunlight, from every angle, it's flat. Sometimes the hue (?) changes, from reddish to orangeish, but always flat.

Ultimately my original problem with jeep hasn't been and won't be resolved: The color I thought I was buying, the color in all the ads everywhere, doesn't exist. That burnt orange metallic really knocks my socks off; unfortunately, it seems to come from Photoshop rather than a paint shop. Bait and switch. I love everything about my jeep - my rolling Home Depot bucket - except the color. Time for a paint wrap.

Re: Sunset Orange

Yeah personally I like it with the Willys blacked out package. I agree with you that Home Depot could use these as fleet vehicles.
When you get that color shift that is the red pearl working. But expecting one color and getting a much different one is hard to live with for sure. Please post pictures when you get it wrapped, I would like to see how that turns out.

Re: Sunset Orange

I will post pictures, definitely. I have in mind the ALSA company's Radical Red - Alsa Corp | Metallic Paint Wraps

Can't do it until the temps are at least 70, but it won't be long until summer is here in north Idaho.

Love ALSA Corp and have been using their product ever since House of Colors sold out to Valspar. Good choice

Re: Sunset Orange

That's really good news! They have great stuff on their website - wonderful products of all kinds. It's good to hear from a pro that they're a good company to buy from. I'm not capable of doing an actual professional-level paint job (don't have the facilities) but the paint wraps sound so do-able and perfect for what I want, and they can apparently be simply brushed on. I'll let you know how it goes when I finally do it.

Found this to be a very useful site and somewhat accurate, the link I have posted here takes you to a list of codes and names used for Jeep Chrysler Dodge with the code PLC (LC) for model year 2015

Nice find! Looking at it I see that PPG and Sherwin Williams both list it as the same formula from the 1970 Hemi Orange. Very cool.

Re: Sunset Orange

My newly tricked-out 6-spd Rubicon rolling TC/HDB (Traffic Cone/Home Depot Bucket). The new lift and tires and wheels were the husband's idea - my only contribution was to not say No... I don't much care for the new height (it's a lot more difficult to climb in and out of), but I'm told it will make me safer on the gold prospecting trails and streams.

Still needs lots of new and better lighting, and a paint wrap , but I do love driving it once I'm in it
