talk me into/out of a new JK

My beloved TJ Rubicon has under 24K miles. It's got some rust issues, all fixable. Two panels seems to have some bubbling. Need to replace/repaint. Will cost me a grand. Was thinking about new tires..too

Then I saw and went and test drove a few Willys. Nice. The first '16 I tested was a JKU. I want a two door, but that's the only stick they had. I wasn't impressed, as I thought there's be a lot more power than my TJ. I think all the weight of a JKU makes it a wash. But a few days later, I drove a two door stick and could really it there. It was nice, nice interior and all. I got infatuated with the Willy and called around and got a killer deal. A very tempting one! I almost did the order except can't get the color I wanted, so now I'm thinking and just really indecisive on this one.

Compared to mine, the new jeeps have a lot of computer and plastic. A lot of electrical seems like more can go wrong. I don't care for that, never even want power windows ever!! lol... I also don't like all the big plastic look ever since the JKs came out. Tho' with bigger tires and on the Willys it conceals it a bit more. It's tolerable, but I'm looking at aftermarket flares and stuff. I don't want to spend a bunch of money after getting a new vehicle. OTOH, the ride and power is so nice. I'd expect a little mpg improvement as well. It didn't feel as torquey as my rubicon TJ and honestly that's not bad. The Rubi is geared so low it's not the most pleasant daily driver sometimes. I don't even use 1st gear usually.

But I still love my jeep. It runs so well and if you saw the engine, it's almost as new. I also prefer the smaller size of a TJ. Easier to park anywhere. More room in the garage on a trail which I hardly do anymore.....sigh.. just torn on what to do.

Re: talk me into/out of a new JK

Our family has grown since we got the TJ in 2004, so we've been drooling over the JKU for quite some time now. We finally pulled the trigger on a 2016. You're right, I'm not thrilled with the more electronics and power windows/door locks... I also am not as impressed as I thought I'd be with the power on the 2016 vs the 2004 (but it's certainly not apples to apples- stick 2 door Rubicon vs auto 4 door Rubicon Hard Rock).

One thing to think about as much as you don't want to think of yourself as a mall crawler, those of us that use our Wranglers for more than just trail rigs should really think about how nice some of the features you didn't necessarily want on a Wrangler are for the everyday experience.

As it is, I suppose my advice is that if you don't want all the electronics/whiz-bang features and you don't need a different size (i.e. 4 door for more people/gear), then stick with the TJ. Properly maintained, the drivetrain of the TJ Rubicon is pretty much bulletproof if not abused tremendously, so I don't think I'm worried about the future needs of our 2004- it's paid for and nothing that will break will cost anywhere near a year of car payments... For us, the easier access to the back seat and the added cargo room behind that seat made it a no brainer- we wanted room for more than just a family and a picnic lunch.

Great points and nice to hear from someone who has a perspective from both sides give a candid reply. The features I prefer on the JK is the power and how damn comfortable those seats are! I'm surprised that people aren't getting better mpg. I thought that was really improved. Either vehicle is capable enough for anything I do. My Rubi already has AC, Sirrius, cruise.etc.. and other stuff I dont use anyhow, lol.

Not much else I'd want. No need for my jeep to have bluetooth in it, or speed sensors, or the computer to tell me when to change oil. Last year, my wife's key FOB on her Toyota busted and it cost us $340 for a replacement key. That's insane. All that kind've stuff scares me and I just want a simple, durable and reliable vehicle.

I don't need a rubi, and kinda wish I stuck with another sport back in the day. It's overkill. I don't mall crawl, but I don't care if someone calls me that. It's a vehicle that I can pull the top, doors, and take the back way through the woods, and mud, or snow storm...to get to the grocery store. : )

Re: talk me into/out of a new JK

I was pretty shocked to find 13.3MPG on my first tank in our 2016 JKU RHR. Most of our trips are <5 mi city driving though, so our mileage sucks in just about anything.

We're with you on the top/doors. The TJ's roof gets hung on the garage roof 6+ mos a year, and probably at least half that time is spent w/o doors. I already ordered half doors for the 2016 and will get a hoist to hang its top in the spring next year. There is certainly more to a Wrangler than hard-core off road- 4 mostly comfortable passengers with that top down feeling is pretty tough to find in a great winter ride as well. Part of why it seems Jeeps and Subarus are the two official state vehicles of CO- all kinds of wranglers sold here to people that don't go offroad for more than just a hiking/mountain biking trailhead.

It's tough to tell somebody that they are quite probably better off keeping their TJ. I'm a car guy at heart. I love gadgets too. New cars/truck/utes make me happy. ...but if you want better MPG, keep the TJ and see what FCA does in 2018 to further address fuel economy regulations.

The fact that you are asking the question typically means you have made your mind up already and are attempting to justify the decision to purchase.

Just do it

LOL…but not quite. It was truly a serious ?. and I decided to keep the TJ and not purchase. I just feel so relieved, and have been indecisive on this for awhile…So much to like about either way. The great deal I was offered didn't help. Weighed the pros and cons. Was infatuated with ordering a new JK for a bit, but my heart is with the TJ. Read about a new update on the pentastar which is supposed to be going in the GC first. Maybe I'll wait a few years for that to happen and see.

You made a good choice. TJ with that low of miles? You would be crazy not to keep it.

Thanks, I am getting a crazy good trade offer from a dealer which really made me indecisive. The fact that the sales manager wanted it for his own, made me second guess. It was between putting $2-3K into it or trading for JK. It wasn't a question of cost either way.

I might regret letting her go, and then I may regret, when they come out with the new upgrades to the pentastar that are in the Grand Cherokee. I'm sure they will make their way into the wrangler eventually. More HP and a LOT better MPG, I'd wanna be trading again, in a year or two...
