Thinking about trading my '00 Cherokee in for a used JK 4-door

So I'm thinking about trading in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with 150k miles on it for a used 2007 JK 4 door. I love my cherokee and have invested thousands in it over the past few years including new cylinder head, a 2" OME suspension, ARB bull bar, limited interior, etc. but have come to the realization that it is probably time to get a more reliable vehicle now that I have a 3 month old son. I travel quite a bit for work usually regionally and want something that will drive a little bit better on the highway but will also give me the option to get a little sun around town and on the way to the beach. I recently purchased a 2007 GC for my wife so if need be I can switch between the JK and the WK for traveling. We also have a 130lb newfoundland dog who likes to come with us, so I'll need to be able to fit him in the back. He fits pretty well in both our XJ and WK.

I just wanted to get your guys throughts as to some of the things to consider when looking at the JK. We live in downtown boston so being able to parallel park on a high is a priority - so I'm debating whether to get a stick or automatic. I've driven stick in trucks only (large dump trucks, pickups, etc.) but don't think it would bother me around town.

Would love to hear anyone who has made the transition from the XJ to the WK and their thoughts.

Thanks,

Pete

Hi Pete,

I have the 04 GC nice luxury ride like a limo plenty of power 4.7 v8. Now have a 11JKU les power, tighter ride, but way more fun.

We have a 125lb Rottie/Shepherd X who travels a lot with us in our JK4D. We took a 10 hour road trip last summer with the dog AND luggage, there was enough room for his bedding back there. He loved every second of it.

We also have 3 kids: 12, 9, 3.5 girls who also travel really well and this is my primary vehicle.

We went from 7 pass, 2001 Old Silhouette to the JK and in 2 years and over 25K miles we have not heard one complaint from any of them. Top on or off :P

I also do not mind taking it to the city at all, it seems a whole lot easier to park and get around in than the van or my Husbands RAM. You may want to be sure to have running boards for the wife is she is short like me, it is a little harder for us to get the little ones in and out of a car seat in the middle of the back seat without them. But I have to say, they certainly do have a great view from back there!

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me feedback. I appreciate the advice with regards to the running boards, I will certianly keep it in mind. What kind of running boards do you have? Are they factory?

How is the noise volume on the highway?

They were just the factory black plastic RB. I like the look of the tubular boards, but as we have a LOT of mud on the roads around here, I like the solid boards because they keep the Jeep cleaner. Not so much for looks, but because loading my little one in the back is hard to do without getting dirty from the mud and dirt that sprays on the back fenders.

They looked just like this, but longer of course: Running Boards

The noise volume on the highway in the '09 was abysmal. Especially when it was windy. But the '11 is a HUGE improvement, perhaps because the interior is more padded.

The ride itself in the '11 is much smoother than the '09 as well.. I am not sure what the technical differences are, but it is definitely noticable.

We have had the '11 for 2 weeks now and done a few 3hr drives and the road noise is not anywhere near what you think. The interior is comfortable and spacious compared to the 2 door. We took the roof off today and went for a drive around the kids loved it and you get next to no wind buffer. If i knew what i do now i probably would of never bought the WK.

Nick.
