This is crazy, right?

So I'm shopping/speccing/building my desired JKU, and am planning on max tow for the 3.73 gears and the Trac-Loc LSD. So my friend (a current JKU owner) tells me that if the jeep has an automatic and the 3.73s, then the LSD is "included", even though it's not listed as an item on the sticker.

This seemed strange and unlikely to me, so I figured I'd ask you folks who knew a lot more about Jeeps and JKs than me. Is there a chance this is true, or was my friend lied to by a dealer or working with old/bad info? Can I tell the difference between a jeep with/without an LSD by looking for underneath?

Thanks in advance,

Dave (really new at this...)

I think your friend is confusing LSD with BLD. BLD is a function of the standard/built-in traction control, and uses the individual brakes to stop a driving wheel from spinning. All Wranglers have this function, regardless of transmission type or gearing.

Find better/smarter friends.

As the others have said, Trac-Lok (LSD) does not become standard equipment with transmission type, different gearing, or adding other options.

It is standard on some Limited Edition models, though, like the current Willys Wheeler and Sahara Backcountry package.

That may be what he's thinking of. And he is a good friend, just badly informed.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I thought it sounded too good to be true. Hopefully I'll find what I want on a lot soon, and won't have to resort to ordering.

Ordering is gonna be your best path to getting exactly what you want. Sure dealers will have something "similar" to what you want, but more than likely have more expensive options included. The 430n radio seems to be a basic option on EVERY wrangler I see. Personally, the 430n is sorely overpriced. Dealers want to move their lot stock by any means necessary. Don't fall into the "Hey, let me show you THIS one over here. It has a few extra options, but it has what you want." Meanwhile you end up paying thousands more in options and interest later on, for something you don't want.

I agree with all of this, but I'm going to do it anyway, because I've been wanting this thing for 2 years. I now am willing to pay a little extra in order to satisfy my need for instant gratification.

But I got the trac-loc, gearing, connectivity group and color (red) that I wanted, and I have to "settle" for having power windows and a fancier radio than I really was looking for. I'll have to manage somehow. And instead of getting it in 2 months, I'll have it tomorrow. 😄😄😄😄

And for a brief time, I'll be a 2-jeep household until my 98 TJ sells....

I wouldnt get a vehicle without power windows and locks anyway. The extras i hate paying for are "safety" options bundled into a package that nobody wants but has to get because ut has ONE option they have to have. The upgraded radio is ok, but still way overpriced. Glad you're happy with your decision. Waiting sucks lol

There's something to be said for picking one out on a lot. You get a chance to drive it and give it a good going over before handing over your cash. There are a few, not many, who special ordered only to see their baby arrive with scratched paint, rough running engine etc.... so yeah, if you can find what you like, I say it's the way to go. Congrats.

Re: This is crazy, right?

So it's done and I got it and it is every bit as awesome as I knew it would be. I even got a nice afternoon (in November in upstate NY!) to take the top off for a couple hours. Thanks again for the advice, and I'll see if I can figure out how to post pics.
