Undercarriage

2013. Ohio. It's already got surface rust on the undercarriage. Drives me nuts.

Today I pulled the wheels, cleaned the bujezzus out of them inside and out, painted my calipers gloss black (duplicolor brush-on caliper paint), and sprayed everything with Rustoleum Rust Reformer. I normally wouldn't post a simple paint project like this, but I'm extremely pleased with the results and the finish. I've got a little more to do tomorrow, but you can see the huge difference from the first picture. A few days ago, I sprayed everything down with degreaser and used a deck brush on a pole to get the undercarriage at least relatively clean. A very light wire brushing, and it was time to paint. We'll see how long it holds up.

Looks great! Should add some life to the frame.

Re: Undercarriage

Thanks! Even if I need to re-do this annually, for a few bucks in paint, it's totally worth it. Curious to see how long it lasts.

Anyone know of a way to spray the inside of the frame?

Re: Undercarriage

Looks good now. Unfortunately it will not last long. Lots of road debris along with salt, rocks, sand and dirt to name a few that will play havoc with that sort of coating.

Re: Undercarriage

We'll find out! Have you used Rustoleum Rust Reformer before? I have not.

I intend to grab pics every time I rotate the tires and update this thread. At about $25, even if it holds for a year, I'm pretty happy.

I've always had awesome luck with Fluid Film. I've used it on my past jeeps and not one spec of rust; even after the New England winters!

Does that come with some sort of tube to get the inside of the frame?

Re: Undercarriage

Looks like you did a nice job with the Rustoleum. I've been researching this very issue. 1. I have a 9 yr.old Chevy crew cab dually that is showing frame rust as well and it's been worrying me silly. 2. I just ordered a Willy's Wheeler W and can't stand the thought of having it rust. I thought initially about Ziebart and similar coatings. But was not happy with reviews of these types of coatings. Came across "Fluid Fill". A spray on lanilon based product. Folks who'vd used it and reviewed gave it high marks. I just ordered a 2 gallon kit to have it ready to apply when the Willy's come in.

Thanks!

Will you give us a play-by-play on the Fluid Fill application once you get it done?

Are you meant to rotate tyres? Take them off put them back on different bolts or completely different axels?
