Question We are going to go look at a 98 Jeep tomorrow...any tips? Link Inside

https://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/cto/6047197285.html

My friend is interested in this Jeep. We are going to look at it tomorrow. I dont have a lot of experience with Wranglers. I have had a 02 GC and a 02 Cherokee.

Is there anything we should immediately look for with this year and model. We asked for VIN to run a car fax.

Thanks.

The TJ has just shy of a million body mounts. Check them and make sure they have not rusted off. While your under there, have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth. Look for any play in the steering components. Rust on the fender tops, rockers, and near the license plates is common. For the test drive, accelerate slowly and pay attention to any wobble that developes in the steering wheel.

If everything checks out, that is a good price.

How many miles? Check under the floor mats in the footwells for rust.
Not that rust isn't expected but so you know what you are getting. Otherwise good looking TJ.

Suggestion, Open the Hood and take note of the exhaust where the 3x3 down pipes connect as these ares are prone to breaking.. the weld on the 3x3 down pipe tends to over heat, crack and even break the weld away from the exhaust. This crack or open joint can cause loss of back pressure and reduce performance.. (making the jeep seems less responsive) ask if the jeep has had new headers or stock manifold installed. Lastly, check around the radiator as the seal at the top of the radiator will expand and contract often based on any over heating issues.. check the gasket around the oil pan.

Damn exhausts manifold cracks. I had one that would open up when it was warm and draw in fresh air, blowing it past the o2 sensor.

Ok.. so I was told correctly?, @ArcherAce I just had a hunch thats all.. seems several buddies of mine with the only straight 6 have to replace the exhaust manifold or upgrade to a header.. but even then, just seem to be a weak point.. I think if someone like Banks, Magnaflow etc would make a cross over pipe system to relieve some of the stress on the 3x3 connection.. this might eliminate the issues.

Hey @jms493 it's common place to keep this in mind when purchasing a used jeep.. Those selling tend to be getting rid of a really used vehicle and /or trouble which they have no clue in knowing how to correct this issues.. because we're in the market for a jeep now just to get rid of the Ranger.. we see all kinds of jeeps some look good while others not so good.. Be willing to drive to other states to purchase, check the independent sites like cars.com etc for all those jeeps you're interested in. Lastly, if you're unsure of what to look for when your looking at a jeep etc.. best locate a friend who knows more about the most common issues with that particular jeep.
