Whats the deal? Help a new guy decipher the sales pitch!

So, I went to the local dealer the other day to take a Wrangler for a test drive. Prior to that visit, I called the dealer and got put on the phone with a sales guy that was part of "The Internet Sales Team."

So , during the test drive, we talked quite a bit. He was pleasant and knowledgeable and in general a nice guy. The experience was good. I asked him fro a business card and he said he didn't have one. He explained that he and his partner were both more than happy to help.

I though that was pretty nice and he continued to explain that they didnt make their money off of commission on individual sales, but that they made their money when they sold volume.

I asked him, trying to be as polite and frank as possible, if that meant that I'd get a better deal when working with his team versus the normal sales staff.

His answer was a resounding "YES!" According to him, if I dealt with regular sales guys, I'd get hit with $995 "dock charge/fees" and then they always add $1500-$2000 onto the invoice price and the bargaining starts from there.

He also said the he and his partner just made it easy. No dickering, dealer invoice plus $4.00 and the deal was done.

Seem legit? What is the "grift" if there is one? Not trying to be a jerk, but this is my first jeep and not my first rodeo . . .

Invoice is the new MSRP, it is where negotiating starts nowadays. If the dealer disagrees with that you shouldn't give them your business. Unfortunately car manufacturers realized many years ago now that there invoice numbers were common knowledge just increase prices enough where there is plenty of money at invoice to give the dealers various different kickbacks.

I swear I read this story elsewhere. Funny.

Anyway, invoice is an ok deal, but far from stellar.

Your employer can get you 1% under invoice as a starting point with the "Chrysler Affliates Reward Program" (I used this from my job) if they offer that. Or you can join "Thread Lightly" for the 1% under invoice for a better starting point. I think you must have the membership for 30 days for it to be applied. Good Luck. BTW, it is best to deal with the internet sales managers of fleet managers for less games

Re: Whats the deal? Help a new guy decipher the sales pitch!

I was able to get my Dad a Wrangler by locally having a dealer price match the Texas 5.5% below invoice group buy.
Added costs were 100 for treadlighty, 122 for document fees, and 995 delivery.
