Will the 2016 Jeeps be safe from hacking?

An article just came out in wired detailing remote hacking of a Jeep vehicle, see http://www.wired.com/2015/07/hackers...l-jeep-highway . Will the 2016 Jeeps be safe from hacking or is it best to get a vehicle without the manufacturers entertainment system and put in an entertainment system that is not linked to the operation of the vehicle? I am not an expert in these issues but this sounds like a real problem.

I doubt your vehicle is ever going to get hacked for one. Chrysler also came out with an update to prevent such scrutiny. Don't worry too much.

Thanks Overlanding. It is good to know that Chrysler is dealing with it.

They will ALL be safe, being a 2016 has zero to do with it.
Welcome to the world of regular software updates for your vehicles.

I was waiting for PCP for 2015 and it did not drop, so I got my wife a new Sublime Green Challenger instead. Now I will wait for the 2016 to unfold all the way before I buy in October or November.

I did not plan on getting the Uconnect myself, but the Challenger has it, and it was not vulnerable.

You can go to this site and plug in your VIN to see if your vehicle is vulnerable.

Uconnect® Software Update - Update your Uconnect® System

If there is a patch available for your vehicle, download it to a thumb drive and go stick it in the car, you will get instructions on how to update it.

There are no over the air updates like your android, as far as I know. You will have to do it yourself, have the dealership do it

Re: Will the 2016 Jeeps be safe from hacking?

No vehicle with communications interfaces is totally safe. They can be made pretty safe and make it expensive/difficult to get into, but with enough compute power, experts, and equipment, if you think you can keep everyone out you are dreaming.

Having said that, it doesn't take a lot to make it fairly difficult for the typical hacker to get in--most just buy crack stuff off the dark web and have a bit less real knowledge than your 8 year old neighbor. In other words, the quality of the typical hacker isn't particularly impressive--although some of the stuff that is available is.

Wranglers don't have such a system at all. So, you'll be safe buying a 2016 Wrangler.

Re: Will the 2016 Jeeps be safe from hacking?

According to many auto manufacturers including Chrysler, those that "tune" their ECU are essentially "hacking" their vehicles.

Put computers onto vehicles and that's what happens.
