Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

Hi, new to the forum here. I just want some opinion. I had a Grand Cherokee 2012 Laredo 3.6. It was a great car for a daily driver but I had this problem on the TIPM and the dealership is going to make a refund. I dont have enough money to buy a Grand Cherokee, just a Cherokee or a Wrangler Unlimited.

So ive done some research on both of the cars, here is what i learned:

Cherokee 2015:
Pros:
Great mileage with the four cylinder
Its practical
Its a daily driver
It has a refined interior

Cons:
To small for me
I dont like the new fiat look on the cherokee
9 speed automatic is not entirely good

Wrangler Unlimited 2015 hard top:
Pros:
Love the looks of the car
It has the 3.6 pentastar that rides great
Its big but not to big
Love the classic look

Cons:
Ive heard is really not comfortable ride (never driven one)
Is not a daily driver they say
Handling is really poor they say

I really really want the wrangler but ive read that there are some complaints because the car is uncomfortable for a daily driver. They say they leak water to the interior of the car. There is noise when highwayspeed. Its a rough ride.

I dont care to ride a rough ride, ive driven a Liberty 2008, a Mustang 2008, a Ford Ranger 2007, a Grand cherokee 2009 and a Grand cherokee 2012. From all the list, i hated the mustang, every other car I loved driving them

So do you think a wrangler unlimited is for me?

Sorry for the long post
.

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

No one can tell you what you should buy... it's really your money and decision. What fits your needs the best?

I'm sure individual owners of the Cherokee and Wrangler will chime in with their opinions. Not sure what your tolerance level is but if ride quality is your big concern you'll be stepping down going to either vehicle from a GC.

I know its my decision, but maybe I didnt elaborate the question so well. Its a Wrangler really uncomfortable to be a daily driver? I love driving big cars like the Liberty 2008 or a Grand Cherokee 2009. Are they the same ride like the Wrangler?

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

It's individual tolerance levels... some think the Wrangler rides good, some don't. Of the 3 vehicles we're talking about it most likely will ride and handle the worst.

Did you take any out for a thorough test drive to see for yourself?

Its not the same to a drive test to actually drive it for a month. I consider myself to like tough rides, but I just want to know if its a horrible idea to get this car for a saily driver

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

A test drive can tell you quite a bit and it shouldn't take a month to decide.

Some questions...

Where do you live and what kind of weather conditions do you face in the winter?

Do you tow or need room to haul anything?

How is the quality of the roads you drive on daily?

Do you plan to do any off-roading?

Which vehicle do you feel meets your needs the best as a daily driver... regardless of ride quality?

Are you willing to live with a potential ride quality issue as a trade-off in the vehicle you seem to want the most?

Lots of variables here that we have no clue about.

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

Where do you live and what kind of weather conditions do you face in the winter?

-I live in the city, 90% of the time i will be on the city with sometimes some potholes on the pavement but its not too much, ocasionally drive to the beach. In winter i just face heavy raining for like a month, no biggie

Do you tow or need room to haul anything?

-I dont need to haul anything but yes i carry too much stuff and a cherokee wont be of help

How is the quality of the roads you drive on daily?

-Like i said, there are some random potholes but not too much

Do you plan to do any off-roading?

-Like 2 times a year i offroad but not for sport just to go to certain places that doesnt have a road

Which vehicle do you feel meets your needs the best as a daily driver... regardless of ride quality?

-I love driving big cars, thats why i dont love so much the idea of buying the cherokee.

Are you willing to live with a potential ride quality issue as a trade-off in the vehicle you seem to want the most?

-I just want to know if people exagerate the comfort of the wrangler. Ive driven like I said many off road suvs and loved it.

Lets say this:

If from scale of 1 to 10, 1 is the wrangler and 10 a cadillac, where do you put the grand cherokee and the liberty?

Thanks for helping!

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

I haven't driven a new Cherokee yet and the last time I drove anything like a Wrangler, it was an old 87 CJ-7 Renegade. With that said, if I had to rank ride quality based on what I've read and other people have said, I'd rank the GC first, the Cherokee second and the JK/JKU last. Again, that's a subjective opinion.

The JK can be a rough rider depending on how it's optioned. So can the JKU you're considering. The JKU's longer wheelbase will give it a better ride than a JK, so that's a plus. Ride quality generally isn't a big issue for those hell bent on having one... it's part of the aura of owning one.

Another question...

Have you priced a Cherokee or JKU out optioned the way you'd want one, then compare it to a GC Laredo, Altitude or Limited? The GC may still be the better overall value and meet all of your needs based on what you stated above.

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

Having driven both, I can attest to the Cherokee definitely having the better ride. It also accelerates nicely even with the 4cyl. That being said, the Wrangler rides a LOT better than the older jeeps (suspension isn't quite as bouncy). Honestly I'd say its in between the Ranger and the Liberty in terms of how the ride feels. That is to say, I always like how fun the Ranger feels to drive (especially with a manual), but the unlimited is a little more refined than that by virtue of having a more spread out wheelbase in comparison.

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

The Wrangler is basically the exact same base that left WWII. If you are off-reading and can hand spray it daily at the coin op car wash it's one thing. Another is to live in a snow belt state with leaky hard shell, a convertible back that takes up all of your storage space except for those two-three times a year you pull the hard top off.

There is a reason they replaced these machines with HMMVs as they are outdated generic 4 x 4 meant for rough trail beating and not for a consumer based car that is tuned for daily commutes. They are bad in the cold and heat. Off road they work as low my as you are okay rinsing your interior out with a hose. That's what wranglers are all about. It blows my mind the prices they are charging these days for an early 1950s modified design. They were not designed for A/c, a second set of doors, ergonomics, aerodynamics and especially power doors and windows. That stuff will eventually break. If you like the Wrangler buy a 20 sine year old rig with solid drivetrain and s good top. Manual seats, manual doors and windows if it had them are the best you can do clever understand there will be noise from everywhere. It's not a great tow vehicle but either is the Cherokee. Look at a marked down version of the Durango or a four door Chevy crew cab.

Cherokees are weird by design. I've looked at them and just to terms with that. You don't want the limited as its a completely different beast. Get the V6 version of the Latitude with little electronics or you will end up regretting it. The Limited is the most hackable vehicle of 2014-2015. The 4 cylinders are for basic commutes. Not turbo models like nearly every other small crossover. I see if you want to off-road and upgrade to the trail hawk but understand with skid plates and weight there is s big fuel trade off and most of that equity will evaporate for the first 24 months of purchase. The WK2 is s different beast. I might look at used Limited versions with good infotainment because it has nice trail specs and works well in fouls weather. You won't have continuous leaks of hot and cold. You will have accepted mirage and predictability. The 2011-2014 are beast with recalls right now but they are small things. Without a doubt if I was to buy a Wrangler it would be the first 4 doors or older with money spent on drivetrain and top. Everything would be manual and I would expect that trail ride back breaking suspension. If I'm commuting I deal with the for now, uncomfortable looks or I look at other brands. Period. There are deals out there, but the 2 cars you ask about are so inherently different from base to their soul and buyers base. The Wrangler is a rough and tumble rig you need to know how to work on. No big deal buying new. The Cherokee is fine to commute. You will get used to the looks and it will get you where you want to go. The 9 speed tranny is good but you will never be in 9th. It's for all reasons an 8 speed but still smooth double clutch feel with decent gas mileage. Don't buy one because it looks semi-cool. The trade offs for the average guy including all the headaches for electric system going where they were never meant to be in the first place is just crazy. The Wrangler/CJ 2 door Jeep have the steering wheel attached to the firewall. That sums it all up there. A $15K max rig costing over $32K. That's just crazy with more things to break but people do it because financing is available. Invest in a never car whose looks while different aren't as radical as the vehicles they compete with. You could be in a Kia or Toyota. If you want a compromise look a Dodge for the Pentastar and reasonable passenger and cargo with acceptable specs but it's not a brand you can fill your ego with at heart. It's why so many police agencies use chargers. They do what they are designed to do. No less, no more. Jeep is a weird brand. U love it and hate it almost as passionately.

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

I looked seriously at the new Cherokee, partly because of my own experience owning an XJ. Though, I owned an YJ too.

The new Cherokee is more refined, more modern, more state-of-the-art. If you like toys, you can get everything from a Garmin based 8.4AN Nav system, to Adaptive Cruise Control w/ Collision Mediation, to Lane Departure/Blind Spot monitoring, to a Wireless Charging Pad for your phone. Possibly, those might make your daily commute more pleasant? I have the ACC on our Charger, and it does makes commuting in heavy traffic and in jams a bit more tolerable.

A Wrangler, on the other hand, is like a pair of 501's. Nothing fancy, but can take a lot of abuse and look the better for it.

Re: Wrangler 2015 or Cherokee 2015?

I think a lot depends on how much your daily commute is. The cherokee is far better in regards to ride and handling, Nvh and comfort, however driving a wrangler 100km a day to and from work is easy driving
If the cherokee is to small criss it off the list and move on.
