Wrangler Door Storage

Does anyone know a good option for door storage? I live in an apartment, and this past summer I would basically take the doors off and lean them up against the walls and such (very bachelor style), so I'd like some sort of kart or something that may work better as far as storing the doors.

2015 4 door by the way

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

I've seen a few carts out there and even plans where you can build your own. I've seen them hung (windows rolled down) by the upper glass frame using padded bicycle/ladder hooks from the Depot. I'm not sure what I'm doing with mine yet...probably going in the spare bedroom when they are off.

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

Ya, building one seems to be the better way to go. Found this which seems to be a good idea/starting point. I'm in an apartment, so I'm trying to think of a way to make this foldable/storable but I like the concept ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1456437543.279812.jpg

I like that one! What's the distance between uprights?

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

I'm not sure, I was thinking 8-10 inches. I'm planning on making the upright poles taller, so the doors can lean on those (padding) instead of each other. I'm trying to figure out a way to make it fold down (portability and storage when not in use) while still strong enough to hold the doors securely in place

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

Maybe instead of folding, you make it a knock-down. Instead of metal, maybe use PVC flanges and pipe. Drill a hole in the flange, through the pipe and pin it. That way you can easily pull pins, and remove the uprights when you're ready to store it.
-or-
don't use flanges at all and drill holes in the frame for the pipes to go in. If you have the thickness in the frame you can drill most of the way though, but not all the way. Then just drop in your uprights when you need to.

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

The 2nd is a really good idea. I was thinking something along the lines of pins you can pull out (similar to truss bar), but I like your idea of making the frame thick (maybe something to catch it underneath the 2x4, or something besides 2x4 frame) and having the pipes sit inside that. Good call

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

It's rare, but from time to time, I'll have a decent thought

You can stop it with a simple metal "T" brace screwed to the wood underneath if you want to go all the way through.

The base frame could be built, then cut in half. Add hinges, and now that folds up too!

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

I actually thought about doing that as well, but my fear on that would be strong enough hinges to not break with the tension of doors on it. I trust 2x4's more on that.

Or am I wrong on that? As in, hinges would work to fold the base and keep tension strong with the doors on

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

I haven't done this yet, but I keep thinking about it: bolting half hinges and latch points to my wall, then just drop the doors into the hinges and "close" them against the wall to the latch points. Safe, secure and (mostly) out of the way.

Re: Wrangler Door Storage

If you use even door hinges you'll be fine. As long as the hinges only travel 180 degrees, you'd be fine. If you really wanted added security, you could use a continuous hinge. Or...why make it all one unit? Make 2...one for each set of doors. You may have to buy an extra 2 casters, but now you don't have to buy hinges or fold anything up.

I saw someone do that...they installed loops on the open 2x4's of their garage and hung the doors on them. If you've got the wall space, it's probably the most convenient way to go.
