Re: Wrangler JK 2014 interior Map Light Led

I have mine red, but I used a red lens to cover the hole instead. The only way to get them white would be to remove the board and unsolder the chips. Resolder some white chips to the board.

It's easy, if you have the equipment and steady hand to do it. I don't anymore. If I had a table setup I might try it. Unfortunately that's the only way to really get the color to match to cool white. You could try a purple/blue tint lens, not sure how that would look without trying it.

Re: Wrangler JK 2014 interior Map Light Led

What are the other LEDs for the interior? I am looking to change the interior of my 2015 Unlimited.

Re: Wrangler JK 2014 interior Map Light Led

If they haven't changed the design since 2013, here's the breakdown.

The two map lights are COB (chip on board). They are soldered in place.

--------------------------

The two lights over the front seats are 194 bulb slots mounted sideways with a reflector in back to push the light down through the lens. I used a multi-directional bulb and it looks fine.

If you want BRIGHT then I suggest these - you only need two, so check his other listings (I do multiple cars so this is the listing I bought) -

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o03_s00

If you want a useable light output, where you can see, but it's not BRIGHT, then look at these. This is what I run in my Jeep now because I don't like it really bright. Amazon.com: Pilot Automotive (IL-194R-5) Red 5-SMD LED Dome Light Bulb - 2 Piece: Automotive

----------------------------

The rear light is a sideways mounted bulb, it cross references to a 578 bulb, but I couldn't find a marking on the stock bulb to confirm this.

*** This bulb must be CANBUS compatible. *** The others don't need to be.

I did a completely different type of install on mine I won't go into, but it was more work than replacing a bulb.

This is a 5050 chip on the listing below - it will be dimmer than the 5630 chip used in my suggestion above for the bright bulbs. See my note below on chips. It will likely match the listing from Pilot above, Pilot most likely is using the 5050 chips.

http://www.amazon.com/JDM-ASTAR-Ligh...ds=578+red+led

When you shop for LED bulbs, look at your listing for the chip type. This is important when you balance your light output. If you want the same light output on all the bulbs, you need to do this, or you'll have some bright lights and some dim. This is what JDM ASTAR has on his listing -

"Our 5630 SMD T10 bulb is brighter than 5050 ,3528 ,1210,3014 SMD T10 led bulb in the market . BEST VALUE"

Re: Wrangler JK 2014 interior Map Light Led

Thank you Lusas_Naturae. I changed out all the lights now to the cool white LEDs. So I actually was able to change out the existing soldered map light LEDs (under the rear view mirror). It takes some doing.. First, you need a really hot soldering iron, and no fear in dremeling some of the plastic pieces haha. The solder did not want to come off the existing LEDs easily, and I thought about using the soldering iron to start stripping the led itself (little by little), but ended up using a hotter iron and got the LEDs off.

I bought single component LEDs from superbrightleds.com, which size wise wasn't going to fit (I was really counting on it to fit, but it was only like $.65 for those LEDs), so then I got 3mm LEDs, cut off most of the legs, and soldered the legs to the leads. I had no idea which was positive and which was negative, so I got lucky that one worked and one didn't, so of course I switched the one that didn't.

I used a dremel to sand down the glass around the led in order to diffuse the light, and now it works perfectly!! I have matching cool white LEDs all throughout the Jeep and none of that ugly yellow light! I am very happy I tackled this project and I don't have a ton of electronic experience, so hopefully this can help some DIYers to tackle this led project!

Re: Wrangler JK 2014 interior Map Light Led

I commend your work there. Most people won't have the balls to tackle chip on board LED replacement. You also found the biggest issue involved, soldering temperatures.

Since you did write up the details, I'll add this if you venture back into this again (like for the footwell lights, another COB situation). Pick up a desoldering braid/wick (http://www.amazon.com/Steren-400-168.../dp/B004NEUII8) from somewhere to pull the existing solder off the chip you're removing. Cut off a one inch section and use a hemostat or locking tweezers to hold the wick to the solder you want removed while heating it up. The melted solder will transfer to the wick.

Lusus... how did you get to circuit board in rear view mirror for chip on board replacement?

Re: Wrangler JK 2014 interior Map Light Led

It's pretty straight forward once you get looking at it. Start by unplugging the wiring harness plug from behind the mirror (you may have to open a door by feel) and loosen the screw in the mirror mount on the windshield. Slide the rearview mirror up and out so it's free.

Now you can look at the back of it. I honestly don't remember much from here, but I know I just looked at the back and figured out how the mirror came apart. I believe it's just a few screws and then the case can be pried open slowly.

Once you have it open, you will see how everything comes apart on the inside, again, it's pretty easy to tell. I have a few photos from when I got in and glued my glass beads to color mine red, I left the original COB and just used red glass beads to tint it. The dark red didn't wash out to pink, it matches my other red LEDs. This may be something to consider doing if you are trying to do a color and not the "blue-er white" LED look.

Here's the link to my photobucket. I keep projects I do here, so feel free to browse all the files if you want.

This is probably the only useful photo showing the inside fo the mirror. The LED COB is located behind the red bead, it's accessible from the center of the reflector, but it's tight.
