Re: 0W40 Oil Wear After 5000 Miles

For what it's worth you are likely ok going to 5 or six thousand miles interval on the oil change unless your vehicle is used in a severe duty applications this should be fine this is the interval I use for my SRT with mobile one oil and filter

Re: 0W40 Oil Wear After 5000 Miles

One more quick thing a lot of people are under the misconception that oil wears out this is not true or oil needs to be changed because it becomes contaminated there are many semi trucks on the road that have 3 to 4 or more hundred thousand miles on the oil because they use what's called a bypass oil filter system this is a system that constantly filters the oil at a low rate in addition to the stock factory filter these filters are changed on a regular basis and oil analysis is done at that point there is a small amount of fresh oil that gets added when the filters are done and this refreshes the additives in the oil. The oil only gets changed when the lab tells you its time. Additionally analysis can alert you to impending disaster by letting you know if there are an increase in wear metals or coolant present or even fuel in the oil.
Testing is more practical for semi owners because obviously their financial future is at stake

Re: 0W40 Oil Wear After 5000 Miles

Yup, it's esp important to change oil on new vehicles as a lot of mental gets shaved into the oil. While it may not be apparent at first you could help your engine a lot in the long term by doing a few extra changes.

Neat test and comparison though, thanks.

Re: 0W40 Oil Wear After 5000 Miles

went to the local Chrysler/jeep dealership to get my first oil change at 3000 miles and they told me they put 5w20 semi synthetic oil in all the hemis. I questioned them because all the stuff I received from SRT said to use Ow40 but they blew off my questions. They did their oil change and I called up SRT to ask about this and was told that yes it needs ow40 and it says so right on the oil cap. so I called the dealer manager and they totally skirted the issue of them putting the wrong oil in my truck. I also found out from SRT that the dealer wasn't SRT certified; shared that knowledge with the dealer manager and they said they were certified to work on SRTs. I was like hey Chrysler and SRT both told me you aren't so deal with it.

went to wal mart and got 10 quarts of the mobil1 ow40 for 48 bucks total and had the local Valvoline change it out and told them my story for a good laugh.

THE OIL CAP DONT LIE

You went to the dealer, and they told you what oil they planned to install?
And you had an owners manual, a filler cap, and this forum that indicated this particular dealer might be brain dead?
And you let them TOUCH the vehicle?!!!!
To the point of putting in oil that you knew was wrong before they touched it?

Yes I know little about oil but I was kind of blindsided by their statements that I could use that kind. So I did more research. They will NEVER touch it again. Thats what she said.

Re: 0W40 Oil Wear After 5000 Miles

I've been sending my oil (Pennzoil Ultra Full Synthetic) out to Blackstone for testing (bought a 6-pack). My plan is to use Full Synthetic 5W20 oil and change it every 6 months, which is about every 7,500 to 8,000 miles based on my driving.

The first was at 8,330 miles with 5,120 on the oil . They noticed wear-in materials (i.e. copper and silicon), but that was expected. They said I was fine to go 7,500 miles.

SUS Viscosity @ 210F - 53.4
cSt Viscosity @ 100C - 8.29
TBN - 4.0

The second was at 16,833 miles with 8,503 on the oil. They noticed a lower level of residual wear-in materials and said that I would be fine going 10,000 miles.

SUS Viscosity @ 210F - 54.1
cSt Viscosity @ 100C - 8.52
TBN - 3.1

One of these days I'll stop being lazy and post the full reports.

Note: Mine isn't an SRT. I have a V6 Limited so the oil characteristics may be different.
